JOB DESCRIPTION:
Human Resources announces an opening for a 1.0 FTE position located in the Office of Academics, in the Syphax Education Center and works under the direction of the K-12 Director, Advanced Academics and Talent Development to assist in coordinating countywide advanced academic and talent development services. This is a twelve-month position Grade P-16.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Works under the direction of Director, Advanced Academics and Talent Development to:
    • promote, advocate for, and successfully implement, assess, and improve the consistency of advanced academic services. develop and implement the Local Plan for the Gifted.
    • support advanced learners' needs across content areas, special education, English Learners, and the Arts.
    • provide professional learning opportunities for Office of Academics staff, administrators, and teachers
    • manage the Summer Residential Governor's School and World Language Academics, Dual Enrollment (DE), Advanced Placement (AP) and International Baccalaureate (IB).
    • manage multiple adjudications for Dance, Instrumental and Vocal Music, Theatre, Visual Arts and the application process for above categories plus Academic programs.
    • collaborate with the Office of Assessment on assessment processes for Advanced Academics and Talent Development
    • supervise the Advanced Academics Specialist
    • coordinate and support the work of Advanced Academic Coaches
    • analyze various data on advanced learners to support continuous improvement.
    • work collaboratively with professional learning communities to successfully implement talent development through the YoungScholars Model.
EXPERIENCE:
  • Knowledge and successful implementation of the educational needs of diverse advanced/gifted learners.
  • Knowledge and successful implementation of strategies and curricular resources written for advanced/gifted learners.
  • Knowledge of, and successful experience with, adult learning theory and successful implementation of instructional coaching and facilitating professional learning communities.
  • Knowledge and successful implementation of professional learning focusing on the diverse needs of advanced gifted learners to include Young Scholars.
  • Knowledge of (1) K-12 Virginia Standards of Learning /APS K-12 content areas (2) advanced concepts, principles and practices of K-12 instructional planning and delivery, and (3) learning/educational project management.
  • Ability to collaborate with multiple stakeholders to include supervisors, specialists, administrators, teachers and families.
  • Strong background with instructional technology.
  • Ability to write and speak effectively.
QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Master's Degree in education or any related field.
  • Possession of a Postgraduate Professional Certificate with endorsements in Gifted Education and Administration and Supervision.
  • Must have or be eligible for a Virginia licensure.
  • Five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in education either as a educational specialist at the district level, advanced academic coach or equivalent school based teacher leader position.
  • At least three years of service as an educational specialist at the district level, advanced academic coach or equivalent school based teacher leader position, and provide evidence of (1) skill in (a) teaching at more than one grade level, (b) teaching a diverse student population, and (c) instructional coaching and leading other educators in instructional matters, and (2) skill in collaboratively managing change in educational services, (3) skill in working with multiple stakeholders having diverse perspectives, and (4) skill in helping manage multiple projects and initiatives.
  • Dual endorsement in English as a Second Language and/or Special Education, or in any other content area, is preferred but not required.
