Gilman School seeks a dynamic educator to lead a comprehensive, schoolwide student and adult support programs. The goal of the program is to ensure that students receive the appropriate support to nurture and sustain their physical, emotional, and academic well-being, recognizing the integral relationship between these different components of overall student success.

Reporting directly to the Assistant Head of School, the Director of Wellness and Support will coordinate a team consisting of the Director of Counseling, the Director of PK-12 Learning Support, and the Health Educator, as well as members of the Health Center and Sports Medicine office to oversee three critical areas of student wellness: program development, shared communication between appropriate people and departments, and coordinated responses to student health emergencies. An ideal candidate will also be able to provide psychological support to students, as well as counsel to faculty and staff about working with students.

S/he will also collaborate with the heads of each of the three divisions (Lower, Middle, Upper), the Director of Student Safety Oversight, the Office of Community, Inclusion, and Equity (CIE), the Athletics Department, Parents Association, and Alumni Association to ensure clarity of program within each division and continuity of program throughout the School.

Responsibilities include:
  • Implementing and strengthening current best practices that support the "physical, emotional, and academic well-being" and "wellness" in a Gilman context
  • Continuing to assess and develop Gilman's approach to supporting student wellness
  • Developing a PK-12 program to meet the School's definition of well-being and wellness, identifying the most effective ways to integrate the program elements into each division
  • Building on existing programs and structures and, where appropriate, introducing new components
  • Leading the team of counselors, learning support specialists, and health practitioners
  • Ensuring effective communication about program and student needs between groups, grades, and divisions
  • Coordinating responses to student health emergencies
  • Collaborating with and making referrals to appropriate community support providers and resources for students and families
  • Providing psychological support to students
  • Providing support to faculty and staff through consultation and training on best practices that support student wellness
  • Supporting Human Resources in providing resources to promote faculty and staff health and wellness
  • Establishing what the School will use as evidence for success through research and data
  • Educating and communicating with all school constituents: faculty, parents, and alumni
A qualified candidate will demonstrate:
  • A strong background in school counseling, social work, and/or psychology (MSW, LCPC, PsyD, etc.)
  • An understanding of brain science and research pertaining to wellness
  • Classroom experience and teaching skills
  • Strong interpersonal, organizational, critical thinking, analytical, and communication skills
  • Experience leading a team of colleagues
  • The ability to educate and motivate PK-12 students and adults for Health and Wellness
  • A self-starter mindset with an understanding of program development, implementation, evaluation, and research
  • Experience working in and understanding of systemic frameworks in an independent school culture
  • A personal and professional commitment to health promotion and wellness
  • A sense of humor

The expectation is for year-round (12-month) engagement, and the salary will be commensurate with experience.
