Camp Registered Nurse (PRN)

Job description

Brainy Camps is now collaborating with Melwood on a new summer camp program called Camp Accomplish. Camp Accomplish will continue to offer a consortium of residential (and day camps) for kids living with:

  • Autism
  • Epilepsy
  • Heart disease
  • Hemiplegia/cerebral palsy
  • Hydrocephalus
  • Neurofibromatosis
  • Sickle cell anemia
  • Tourette syndrome
  • Type 1 diabetes
The Camp Nurse is responsible for overseeing the health and safety of campers and staff.

Qualifications:
Minimum Education

ASN

BSN (Preferred)

Minimum Work Experience
1 year RN experience (Required)

Required Skills/Knowledge
The licensed Registered Nurse will successfully complete the hospital and nursing orientation at Children's National.
Keep knowledge base current with new information or changes in specialty area.

Required Licenses and Certifications
Registered Nurse in Maryland (Required)

Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) .

Functional Accountabilities

Provide health care to meet individual needs of campers and minor needs of Children's and Melwood staff (i.e. first aid)

Collaborate with medical staff to meet medical needs.

Follow health care policies/procedures as described in the Healthcare Manual and treatment procedures

Maintain proper safety and environmental controls for medication storage and administration

Safely administer medication and tube feedings to campers

Report and health problems or symptoms of illness to the Camp Director and Medical Director

Perform point of care testing as needed (i.e. glucose testing, urine dipsticks, etc.)

Catheterizations as needed

Assist with transfer and ambulation as needed

Be responsible for contacting parents concerning the status of their child's health by telephone in the following situations: any injury requiring an x-ray, illness requiring an infirmary stay and emergency treatment/ accident, etc.

Organize, maintain, and utilize adequate resources for serving the health and medical needs of the campers and staff

Set up Health Center

Inventory all neccessary medical supplies and equipment, inform Camp Program Manager if items are needed

Maintain accurate and detailed medical records according to State and American Camp Association standards

Utilize and document treatment and medication administration on the electronic health record

Prepare accident report forms

Maintain health record system

Oversee First Aid procedure and supplies

Maintain and distribute first aid kits throughout camp including camp vehicles, kitchen, offices, waterfront, activity areas, out-of-camp trips

Ensure supplies are well stocked and distributed as needed

Screen all campers who are arriving and departing camp

Verify health history and examination

Verify emergency authorization

Identify any observable evidence of illness or communicable diseases

Conduct a health assessment

During arrival, assess all medication for expiration, physician orders, etc.

Upon departure, organize and prepare medication for return to families

Other job duties and abilities

Perform any tasks beyond those assigned as help is needed

Be knowledgeable of outside health resources

Evaluate medical services

Open communication and collaboration with Children's and Melwood staff including but not limited to, Children's Camp Program Manager, Children's Medical Director, Melwood Camp Director, health care staff which may include staff pysicians, nurses, or other dedicated medical staff

Ability to quickly get to remote location on camp property over uneve terrain

Ability to use a telephone

Possess endurance to meet emergency needs
