McCormick Paints is a leading paint manufacturer dedicated to delivering high-quality products and innovative solutions. We are committed to excellence and sustainability in our products and processes. We are seeking a dedicated Bench Chemist to join our dynamic R&D team.


THE ROLE

The Bench Chemist role involves analyzing, testing, and developing new and existing paint formulas, improving efficiencies, integrating new technologies, solving technical problems, and ensuring compliance with quality and regulatory standards. This role requires a strong understanding of chemistry, hands-on experience in a laboratory setting, and the ability to manage multiple projects. The Bench Chemist will work closely with the R&D team to ensure product quality and innovation.


This position reports to the Director of Manufacturing & Technical. The typical work schedule is Monday Friday 6:30 to 3:00 pm.


ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

The duties include, but are not limited to the following. Other duties may also apply, as necessary.

  • Research & Innovation: Conduct laboratory research to develop new paint formulations and improve existing ones.
  • Product Development: Design and test new paint products, optimize existing formulations & raw material usage, and scale up successful formulations from the laboratory to production.
  • Testing and Analysis: Perform testing and analysis to validate performance and quality, as well as to identify areas for improvement.
  • Project Management: Manage multiple development projects simultaneously to align with project goals and timelines.
  • Quality Assurance: Ensure all paint formulations meet quality standards and collaborate with other teams to resolve issues related to product quality.
  • Regulatory Compliance: Ensure all formulations and processes comply with relevant environmental and safety regulations, and participate in compliance submissions.
  • Technical Support: Address technical inquiries and concerns and support the customer complaint process, conducting investigations related to product performance and providing suggested solutions.
  • Documentation and Reporting: Maintain detailed and accurate records of all laboratory activities, including test results, formulations, and process changes. Responsible for providing progress updates, reports on findings, and communicating results and conclusions to relevant stakeholders. Will also serve as point person for production software knowledge and changes to product formulations.
  • Team Collaboration: Work collaboratively with other members of the manufacturing team, as well as cross-functional teams, in order to complete projects to support the overall objectives of the R&D department.
  • Health and Safety: Promote a safe working environment by following best practices and conducting regular safety checks.
  • Housekeeping: Maintain a clean & organized work area, and participate in regular cleaning & maintenance activities to support overall lab hygiene and operational efficiency.


QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor s degree in Chemistry or related field, or 5+ years of technical experience in coatings
  • Proven experience in a laboratory setting, preferably within the paint or coatings industry.
  • Strong understanding of chemistry, paint formulations, and raw materials.
  • Proficiency in using laboratory equipment and software
  • Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills.
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Good communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Knowledge of regulatory requirements and compliance.

  • Must be able to traverse the production facility.
  • Must be able to lift 50 pounds at a time
