Senior Research Scientist


We are seeking a senior-level individual contributor to join a dedicated team focused on sustainability, aiming to use a billion pounds of recycled raw materials and achieve a 2X growth plan. The Senior Research Scientist, reporting to the Director of R&D, will provide technical direction for major projects in developing PVC decking with over 60% recycled PVC resin. This role requires expertise in formulation and process technology to increase recycled content while delivering market-leading products. The candidate will develop an in-depth understanding of product technology and end-use performance, driving technical, cost reduction, and product projects for business growth.


Location: Scranton, PA, or Wilmington, OH (Greater Cincinnati Area). Relocation assistance available.


Key Responsibilities:


  • Develop and utilize PVC products with over 60% recycled PVC resin.
  • Collaborate with Return Polymers to characterize recycled PVC blends.
  • Address diverse challenges in product/process development, improvement, field issues, manufacturing efficiencies, and outsourcing.
  • Lead major projects impacting sales or process efficiency and several smaller projects.
  • Innovate in product and process development.
  • Present technical direction for key projects and programs.
  • Network internally and externally to gather information and identify opportunities.
  • Translate FFUs into product specifications and practice scale-up from experimentation to commercialization.
  • Develop project schedules and present proposals to R&D and senior management.
  • Integrate Lean/Six Sigma and continuous improvement into all projects.
  • Work with external suppliers and partners for timely project completion.


Position Qualifications:


Education:

  • PhD with 0-5 years of relevant experience, MS with 5+ years of relevant experience, or BS with 10+ years of relevant experience.
  • Degrees in Chemistry, Materials Science, or Chemical Engineering preferred.
  • Lean Six Sigma experience desirable.

Skills and Experience:

  • Experience with formulation and extrusion of polymer systems for exterior use, preferably building products.
  • Knowledge of outdoor and accelerated weathering test methods and product requirements.
  • Familiarity with US and International Building Code requirements for exterior residential products.
  • Proven publication record and experience with public speaking, technical literature contributions, and patent applications.
  • Strong background in manufacturing systems, data collection, and statistical analysis.
  • Successful interfacing with internal and external customers.
  • Mechanical aptitude and understanding of manufacturing processes and technologies.
