Biosurveillance Epidemiologist


As required by our governmental client, this position requires being a US Citizen AND have an active Secret clearance or the ability to obtain a Secret clearance to be considered.

The Biosurveillance Epidemiologist will support the Integrated Biosurveillance (IB) section Alert & Response Operations (ARO) team. The candidate will perform event-based and indicator-based surveillance supporting the overall mission of IB. The candidate will also accomplish biosurveillance functions by monitoring sources, verifying information, producing reports, performing high-visibility work, supporting critical medical and public health surveillance activities, and working closely with Geographic Combatant Commands (GCCs) and Force Health Protection staff to promote the health and readiness of the U.S. Armed Forces.


Compensation & Benefits:

Estimated Starting Salary Range for Biosurveillance Epidemiologist: $80,000.00-90,000.00

Pay commensurate with experience.

Work Location: Work week includes on-site and tele-work.


Biosurveillance Epidemiologist Responsibilities Include:

  • Maintain daily awareness of emerging disease occurrences to provide situational awareness support and biosurveillance information products to DoD customers and Interagency partners.
  • Serve as a liaison to one or more (GCC) surgeon cells.
  • Monitor, analyze, and communicate trends from militarily relevant data sources to IB leadership.
  • Present public health surveillance findings on diseases of international importance and military relevance at AFHSB and DoD meetings, meetings with partners, international exercises, and public health conferences.
  • Identify, assemble, and analyze information related to specific biosurveillance projects and or events of concern to DoD beneficiary health.
  • Maintain situational awareness of activities to support collaborations between AFHSB and the GCC(s) of focus to develop and enhance biosurveillance information products by integrating information from various sources both internal and external.
  • Under government oversight, continue open and frequent communications, collaborations, and/or partnerships with key customers (i.e. GCCs, Defense Health Agency, other combat support agencies, and Service public health centers)
  • Support an effective DoD biosurveillance program and operational mission for the assigned region of interest.
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned.


Biosurveillance Epidemiologist Experience, Education, Skills, Abilities requested:

  • A master s degree in public health, epidemiology, or related health discipline
  • Five or more years professional experience in public health, applied epidemiology, or infectious disease.
  • Must have a minimum of 2 years experience with infectious disease surveillance involving scanning for outbreaks, analyzing data and providing accurate and timely reports.
  • Demonstrated excellence in organization, meeting deadlines, and technical writing.
  • Perform statistical analysis using SAS or any other statistical package.
  • Experience using Geographic Information System (GIS) is a plus.
  • Ability to demonstrate high levels of organization, accuracy, and attention to detail.
  • Work effectively with a dynamic and multidisciplinary team.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Applications (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint)
  • Secret Clearance or the ability to obtain Secret clearance.
  • Excellent communication skills; both oral and written
  • Must be a US Citizen
  • The ability to successfully pass a drug screen and a federal background check is mandatory.
  • Must pass pre-employment qualifications of Cherokee Federal.
