Location: Washington, DC / Remote Eligible

HOW YOU WILL IMPACT THE BIG PICTURE:

EWTN Newsis looking for an experienced, sharp and ambitious news editor to run a region that spans more than 20 countries, from long-established Catholic populations in Brazil and Mexico, to the church in decline in Uruguay and the Dominican Republic.

Covering the Church in the region as well as geopolitical and economic trends from a Catholic perspective, the Latin America editor works with the President of News to lead more than 20 journalists in the region and drive coverage of major global events in the life of the Church, as well as focus on themes affecting the faithful and the world.

This is one of the most exciting and rewarding opportunities at EWTN News. It calls for a dynamic and mission-driven entrepreneur with excellent news judgement, a person who can lead and foster a talented regional newsroom to deliver award-winning work across multiple platforms.

As the leader of two agencies in the region, ACI Prensa and ACI Digital, you will oversee a real-time, 24/7 news file in three languages: Spanish and Portuguese, collaborating with English-language translations for stories with impact beyond the regional focus. You will also collaborate with visuals and graphics teams, developing different story-telling formats to reach existing and emerging audiences.

WHAT YOU WILL DO:

  • Lead the ACI Prensa and ACI Digital teams to cover Latin America and inform global coverage of the region across EWTN News.
  • Serve as a senior member of the global editorial team.
  • Develop and manage the regional editorial calendar, develop and implement editorial guidelines, policies, and related compliance.
  • Adhere to copyright laws and compliance, train other team members to ensure application across agencies.
  • Revises content as necessary in order to enhance its quality and approves pieces based on preset guidelines, collaborates with others as necessary to provide expertise, content, and advice regarding bioethics, politics, Church History, Church events, moral theology, general legal, and canon law.
  • Ensures constant diversity of perspective (within bounds of magisterium faithful thought and charity) regarding coverage of news and approach to coverage (what to cover when, how, and from what angle).
  • Ensures proper and consistent catechetical consistency of news and other content.
  • Works closely with the President and COO of EWTN News to integrate the Latin America strategy, content, and overall coverage with the other international agencies across the globe.
  • Checks stories for legal, ethical, and theological concerns and consults with the President and COO of EWTN News on questionable items.
  • Assists with editorial budget planning and manages the editorial budget for Latin America.
  • Periodically evaluates all editors and writers; advises on improvement as needed.
  • Does chief reads on all copy; compiles stories as needed.
  • May represent EWTN News at meetings, functions, and special events as requested.
  • Works with the President and COO of EWTN News to hire, train, motivate, and manage the team; provides regular constructive feedback as needed.
ABOUT YOU:
  • You have 7-10 years' experience in editorial leadership roles, preferably within a News environment. Excellent news judgement and journalistic ability.
  • You also have a minimum of 3-5 years' experience managing direct reports in both on-site and remote environments. Experience leading a large team and a proven ability to create a high-performance culture by managing effectively, differentiating performance, developing talent, and building diverse teams. Desired ability to lead and manage change.
  • You are a practicing Roman Catholic in good standing, possessing a thorough knowledge of the teachings of the Catholic Church with the ability to apply that knowledge to the News coverage.
  • Demonstrated ability to articulate and implement a wider strategic editorial plan for both daily coverage and longer-term regional coverage.
  • Familiarity with different storytelling formats. You must also demonstrate creativity and resourcefulness leading the day-to-day editorial operation.
  • You have strong relationship building and interpersonal skills in order to communication well with internal staff, writers/bloggers, Catholic leaders, etc.
  • You have demonstrated a strong understanding of the role of digital and social media in the current news environment and remaining informed of changing trends.
  • You hold an undergraduate degree in Journalism, English, Church History, Theology, or a related field.
  • You have a track record of developing effective working relationships with senior managers, general managers, other regional editors, business colleagues and HR/Finance
  • You are able to work a flexible schedule, including weekend/nights as needed to meet deadlines and cover breaking news; flexibility to travel periodically domestically and/or internationally as needed.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • An advanced degree in Journalism, Theology, or Canon Law is preferred.
  • Excellent skills in Spanish necessary, proficiency in Portuguese desired
