Summary:
Reporting to the Supervisor of Structural Services, the Carpenter performs a variety of skilled duties associated with preserving and maintains the interiors and exteriors of University buildings and structural repair, alteration, and installation.

Job Description:
  • Works from blueprints or instructions to prepare building interiors for painting, refinishing and decorating; smoothes and/or removes old paint from surfaces; fills nail holes, cracks and joints with putty or other filler; selects remixed paint, varnish, stain, enamel, or lacquer and uses on prepared surfaces, building trim, and fixtures; and creates special effects as appropriate.
  • Works from blue prints or by instructions to build, repair, and install building frames, trim, new walls with studding, floors, ceilings, doors, partitions, cabinets, shelves, furniture, equipment, screens, windows, picture frames, bulletin boards, and counter tops.
  • Prepares and preserves building exteriors; removes old paint by scraping, burning or sanding; caulks frames, glazes windows; applies primer and top coats.
  • Repairs or replaces broken windows and door glass panes.
  • Installs building signage and performs minor carpet repairs
  • Performs plastering on wall and ceiling surfaces.
  • Installs wallpaper, ceramic and vinyl tile, and drywall.
  • Lubricates and cleans equipment.
  • Obtains supplies and equipment for each job.
  • Conducts preventive maintenance inspections according to established schedules; suggests changes and improvements and assists in the development and revision of same.
  • Maintains daily records of work performed and materials used.
  • Erects and dismantles scaffolding and staging equipment; performs work duties from same.
  • Responds to emergency calls.
  • Observes all safety procedures.
  • Assists with other trade and building/grounds maintenance tasks as requested to facilitate the effective delivery of facilities and maintenance services.
  • Establishes and maintains a positive and supportive working relationship with co-workers and supervisor.
  • Shows a genuine commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion in the workplace; and participates in activities and workshops to foster continuous learning.
  • Serves as a mandatory Title IX reporter; and takes annual Title IX training as part of the compliance effort.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications:
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • A minimum of three years of experience with the finishing, carpeting, or a related field.
Preferred qualifications:
  • Strong ability to communicate in American Sign Language.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Strong knowledge of spraying techniques, spray equipment, and all hand and power tools related to carpentry.
  • Strong ability to make plaster and wallpaper repairs.
  • Strong ability to hang, tape, finish, and repair drywall.
  • Strong ability to work from ladders or scaffolding.
  • Strong knowledge of HVAC, mechanical, and electrical work.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with and across University departments, outside constituents and groups.
  • Demonstrated commitment to valuing diversity and contributing to an inclusive working and learning environment.
Additional position Information
  • The incumbent must have a valid driver's permit.
  • The incumbent must be able to lift at least 50 pounds and ability to be contacted by phone for emergency call-in work.
  • The successful candidate must have valid authorization to work in the United States.
  • If the incumbent has no knowledge of American Sign Language, the incumbent is expected to achieve an ASLPI score of 1 plus within two years of employment. If the incumbent is hired with some knowledge of American Sign Language, the incumbent is expected to achieve an ASLPI score of 2 within two years of employment. The supervisor must ensure that the incumbent receives the necessary support to meet this goal.
