THE POSITION

Do you have experience in a breeding facility, skilled maintenance, or trades work? The Pennsylvania Game Commission is seeking a talented and dependable Wildlife Maintenance Propagator to complete our team. This position gives you the opportunity to a ssist with raising the Southwest Game Farm's predetermined quota of pheasants to be released for the sportsmen and women of Pennsylvania. DESCRIPTION OF WORK

A Wildlife Maintenance Propagator has many duties on the game farm that vary day-to-day. Some of these duties include but are not limited to farming, welding, carpentry, electrical, mechanical, and plumbing. You will have the opportunity to assist in the raising and care of pheasants to be released to the sportsmen and sportswomen of Pennsylvania. Work includes preparing the brooder houses, ensuring temperature, ventilation, lighting, feed, and water are properly maintained, administering medication as required via feed and water, and observing the behavior of the birds during all phases of their development to determine that all environmental factors are properly maintained. You will also be responsible for sexing and beak-trimming the chicks before moving the birds from brooder fields to holding pens, maintaining feeders and water lines, removing dead birds from the brooder houses and holding pens, as well as catching birds and placing the birds into shipping crates for distribution to designated areas for release.

Work Schedule and Additional Information:

+ Full-time employment

+ Work hours are 7:00 AM to 3:30 PM, Monday - Friday, with a 30-minute lunch.

+ Shift work will be required during the brooding season.

+ Salary: In some cases, the starting salary may be non-negotiable.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:

+ Six months propagation experience working at a breeding facility that produces a minimum of 1000 game birds, which includes skilled maintenance and trades work utilized in building construction and equipment maintenance and operation.

Special Requirements:

+ This position requires an active Pennsylvania driver's license, which is not under suspension.

WORK BEHAVIOR 3 - RAISING GAME BIRDSParticipate in the raising, caring and distribution of pheasants (or other game birds) which involves preparing the brooder house, i.e., cleaning and disinfecting the buildings and equipment, placing shavings and chick paper on the brooder house floor, sectioning off the area with cardboard and gradually increasing this area as the chicks increase in size; sexing and debeaking the chicks; ensuring that temperature, ventilation, lighting, feed and water are properly maintained; administering medication as required via feed and water; observing the behavior of the birds during all phases of their development to determine that all environmental factors are properly maintained; placing brails on the birds to prevent flight; releasing the birds to outside holding pens; maintaining feeders and water lines; removing dead birds from the brooder houses and holding pens; and catching birds and placing them into shipping crates for distribution to designated areas for release.
