Responsibilities of the Legal Assistant

  • Drafts letters, memos, and court documents.
  • Prepares and formats documents for court, proofreads thoroughly, and scans promptly into the software
  • Sorts incoming mail, identifies urgent documents and notifies attorneys
  • Prepares outgoing mail on time, routes as needed, and logs returned mail
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and other software
  • Operates standard office equipment
  • Prepares client proposals, and tracks retainer letters for new clients
  • Opens, closes, and maintains case and general files according to procedures
  • Manages process service information and coordinates with service providers
  • Welcomes clients and visitors, and prepares the conference room
  • Maintains good client relations
  • Assists attorneys with Continuing Legal Education registration and reporting
  • Supports marketing activities, maintains marketing folders, coordinates event registration, plans marketing activities, and prepares PowerPoint presentations
  • Performs paralegal duties as requested and bills time according to policy and client billing guidelines, including proper task codes when needed
  • Provide coverage for additional attorneys should the need arise
  • Assist with overall office support such as doing inventory and ordering office supplies and other duties as assigned


Qualifications of the Legal Assistant

  • Bachelor s degree preferred
  • Proven experience as a legal assistant or legal secretary
  • Familiarity with law, legal procedures, protocols, and the court system
  • Good understanding of the daily operations of a legal office
  • Ability to prepare templates for responsive pleadings
  • Ability to coordinate and confirm the scheduling of depositions, meetings, phone calls, mediations, etc., and organize court reporters, notices of deposition, and travel arrangements
  • Ability to proofread and finalize pleadings for filing and service as advised by the attorney, generally on the same day
  • Ability to file pleadings with the Court and serve them to attorneys via email and mail
