Director of Macroeconomic Analysis (Internal Only)

Job description

The Congressional Budget Office is a nonpartisan agency that provides economic and budgetary analysis to the Congress and has been ranked as one of the best places to work in the federal government. CBO seeks a Director of Macroeconomic Analysis to lead a division that monitors economic conditions, prepares CBO's economic forecast, conducts analyses of the effects of fiscal policy on the economy and on the federal budget, and works closely with CBO's Panel of Economic Advisers.

The Director of Macroeconomic Analysis collaborates with members of CBO's senior staff to formulate and implement a strategic agenda for the Macroeconomic Analysis Division's analytical work. The division's Director works closely with managers in the division to oversee research, modeling, and the drafting of reports and other analytic products. The division's staff includes a dozen analysts, most of whom have a Ph.D. in economics. The Director is responsible for ensuring that the division functions effectively and that its work continues to meet the highest standards. CBO's analyses of issues and legislative proposals help Members of Congress, Congressional staff, researchers, journalists, and other members of the public understand the effects of policy decisions on the federal budget and the economy. Those analyses receive considerable attention and scrutiny; they must reflect the best thinking and modeling to meet CBO's goal of providing the Congress with objective, nonpartisan analysis.

Qualifications

Applicants must have an advanced degree, preferably a Ph.D., in economics or in a closely related discipline; a minimum of eight years of experience in macroeconomic analysis; the skills necessary to strategically guide the division's work; and examples of success in managing research and writing projects within an organization. In addition, applicants must have superior knowledge of macroeconomics-especially forecasting and policy analysis-and be strong leaders of people who can provide direction, promote professional development, and foster collaboration. Applicants must also have the interpersonal skills to work effectively with many stakeholders in the Congress, in the professional and academic communities, and within CBO.

Salary and Benefits

The salary will be competitive with salaries of Senior Executive Service positions and commensurate with experience, education, and other qualifications. CBO offers excellent benefits and a collegial, respectful work environment.
