Middle East Program - Governance Compared Project

The Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, a global network of policy research centers, is seeking a full-time Research Assistant to support and coordinate activities within the Middle East Program. The research assistant will support a project that compares the quality of governance between democracies and autocracies across the Global South. The project is an extension of Carnegie's groundbreaking analysis of governance in the Middle East, and will include case studies across Asia, Africa, and Latin America as well as the Middle East and North Africa. This position is hybrid, with at least three days per week required in-person in Washington, DC, with an anticipated start date on or around September 1, 2024, and for a term lasting approximately 12 months.

The Research Assistant will contribute to various Carnegie and external outputs, edit and coauthor articles, assist in organizing and coordinating events and meetings in Washington and abroad, engage regularly with government officials, policymakers, experts and civil society interlocutors, and other duties as assigned by the program.

A bachelor's degree in a relevant field is strongly preferred, and candidates should have familiarity with issues of governance, democracy, and political and economic systems in the Global South, and experience with academic research or policymaking concerning the same. Strong candidates will also have familiarity with both quantitative and qualitative research methods. Relevant language skills will likewise be valued and utilized. Applicants must be self-starters with excellent attention to detail, be able to work independently, adapt quickly, and possess strong organizational and interpersonal skills.
