Summary

The Smithsonian Institution is the world's largest museum, education, and research complex, with 21 museums and the National Zoo. This position is located in the Smithsonian Institution's Office of Facilities Management and Reliability.The Office of Facilities Management and Reliability provides the full range of building services through maintenance and operational zones.

Clarification from the agency

This Merit Promotion position is open to Current Federal Employees and Former Federal Employees with permanent status or reinstatement eligibility. Duties

The Electrician provides electrical services throughout the Smithsonian facilities for the installation of electrical wiring systems, fixtures, controls and equipment for the mission, health, comfort and safety of occupants and visitors.

In this position, you will:

  • Provides electrical services throughout the Smithsonian facilities for the installation of electrical wiring systems, fixtures, controls and equipment for the mission, health, comfort and safety of occupants and visitors.
  • Repairs, modifies, maintains and troubleshoots the premise wiring systems of facilities to include interior and exterior wiring, lighting, control circuits, emergency and standby power systems and signaling circuit wiring together with all their associated hardware, fittings and wiring devices, both permanently and temporarily installed.
  • Requires extensive adaption of methods, including the fabrication, installation, modification, and/or troubleshooting of specialized electrical control or monitoring systems and equipment designed to meet unique conditions associated with research projects.

Physical Requirements:
This position requires the physical ability to perform moderately heavy work including lifting and carrying heavy objects up to 50 lbs.; work outside in all weather conditions with exposure to dirt, dust, pollen and insects; climb ladders and stairs; and stand and walk for extended periods.

Additional Conditions of Employment

Must be available to work late shifts, weekends and holidays and is subject to being called in for emergencies to restore the Smithsonian Institution to normal operations.

Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

How You Will Be Evaluated

You will be evaluated for this job based on how well you meet the qualifications above.

  1. Ability to do the work of an Electrician without more than normal supervision.

  5. Ability to use and maintain hand tools used in electrical work.
  6. Ability to troubleshoot electrical problems.
