Program Mission:
The Community Lot Team transforms vacant and abandoned lots in Baltimore City into community gardens and green spaces. AmeriCorps members, community residents, local artists, and volunteer groups serve together to create and maintain thriving community spaces.
Community Need:
Baltimore City contains more than 17,000 vacant lots. Without the necessary resources, communities throughout Baltimore have become burdened by these lots as they move beyond eyesores, attracting dumping and various unwanted activities. Vacant lots are often located within low-income and underserved communities, who could directly benefit from easy access to public green spaces. In order to take advantage of City-owned vacant lots and to address community needs, Civic Works' Community Lot Team has partnered with Baltimore City communities, non-profits, and various municipal groups to transform empty lots into productive green space for community use. The Community Lot Team works with its partners to design, install, and maintain community gardens throughout Baltimore. Our AmeriCorps team member positions provide the opportunity for Baltimore City residents to obtain job skills training in landscaping, carpentry, and construction techniques.
Member Position Summary:
Community Lot Team Members will transform vacant lots in locations throughout Baltimore City into green spaces and public gardens. Team members will learn how to properly use hand tools, power tools, and heavy equipment involved in landscaping. Members will work with community members and help lead volunteer groups to create and maintain improved community lots.
