Job description

The Washington Commanders are seeking a highly skilled and motivated Data Scientist to join our dynamic data analytics team. As a key member of our organization, you will play a crucial role in leveraging data to drive informed decision-making and enhance our team's overall performance.This job provides a unique chance to gain hands-on experience in the fast-paced world of sports analytics while contributing to the success of our team.

Responsibilities:

Data Analysis:

  • Assist in analyzing large datasets to extract actionable insights related to player performance, team strategy, and overall game dynamics.
  • Support development of statistical models to evaluate player and team performance metrics.
  • Work with the NFL Next Gen Stats player tracking data to extract insights for the team.
Programming:
  • Utilize a variety of programming languages, including Python, R, etc., to manipulate and analyze data efficiently.
  • Collaborate with the technology team to develop tools and applications that facilitate data analysis and reporting.
Database Management:
  • Design and maintain SQL databases to store and organize relevant data.
  • Write complex queries to extract, transform, and load data from various sources.
Reporting and Visualization:
  • Create comprehensive and visually appealing reports and dashboards to communicate findings to analytics management team.
  • Utilize data visualization tools to present key insights in an accessible manner.
Collaboration:
  • Work closely with strategy/analytics management team, and other departments to understand data needs and provide actionable insights.
  • Collaborate with fellow analysts to enhance overall data analytics capabilities.
Continuous Learning:
  • Stay current with industry trends, emerging technologies, and advancements in data analytics.
Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's/master's degree in Statistics, Data Science, Computer Science, or a related field.
  • Proven experience in data analytics, preferably in the sports industry.
  • Proficiency in working with player-tracking data.
  • Proficiency in multiple programming languages, including Python, R, etc.
  • Strong SQL skills with experience in database design and management.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Experience with statistical modeling and machine learning techniques.
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to convey complex findings to non-technical stakeholders.
  • Willingness to work collaboratively with others across the organization.
  • Keen attention to detail and willingness to ensure deliverables are accurate and complete.
  • Passion for sports analytics and a deep understanding of football concepts is a plus.
