Job Description Summary

The Portfolio, Development & Enablement leader will develop and execute strategy to grow and optimize performance of $1b+ portfolio of alternative ventures business on a national scale. Responsible for the profitable operation of the book and accountability for identification of business risks; i.e. credit, operational, reputational, etc.

This leader will drive and oversee the creation and oversight of highly customized pre and post-bind requirements, processes and systems, which include the internal- and distribution-partner facing processes needed to support this highly specialized business.

Successful execution relies on a deep understanding of the Alternative Ventures verticals, partnerships, deal/business structures, and the steps needed to move this organization from build to run. The PDE leader must have a deep understanding of financial, capital, risk, pricing, reinsurance and reserving processes.

Job Description

Key Responsibilities:
  • In collaboration with underwriting and distribution, drive the analysis, execution and strategic placement of new ventures/deals both internally and externally.
  • Develop and operationalize deal management processes, including the unique pre- and post-bind requirements of loss-sensitive business.
  • Develop, maintain and oversee portfolio management processes and analytics.
  • Act as the subject matter expert to provide business requirements for new technology development.
  • Outsource and provide oversight for the critical services needed to run this business which falls outside of current Nationwide expertise.
  • Influence and educate internal business partners across the organization and at the highest levels.
  • Help build out and provide oversight for credit and collateral management function.
  • Lead a team of approximately 8-10 associates in the areas of Underwriting Enablement, Portfolio Management and New Venture Review & Support.

Reporting Relationships: This job reports to Vice President, Alternative Ventures

Typical Skills and Experiences:

Education: Undergraduate degree in Business Administration or related fields. MBA and/or licensing preferred

Experience: Fifteen or more years related experience in underwriting, data management, finance or related technical experience; cross platform experience highly desirable - understanding underwriting and technology. Prior leadership experience is preferred.

Knowledge, Abilities and Skills:
  • Strong insurance, pricing, financial knowledge along with broad line of business knowledge and nuances of each.
  • Ability to identify potential problems and implement successful solutions that may have broad impacts within our internal business network.
  • Ability to create new, repeatable processes and continuously improve processes.
  • Excellent communication skills required to influence and negotiate with both internal and external partners, to propose mutually beneficial policies, processes, and solutions.
  • Strong attention to detail along with the ability to organize, plan and align work and manage competing priorities.
  • Possess strong situational adaptability and is organizationally savvy.
  • Brings innovative and strategic thinking capabilities to propose and/or implement short term and long-term solutions. Ability to build effective teams and develop talent.
  • Builds and develops the team by recruiting, training, managing talent as well as being the Brand representative for the E&S/Specialty Alternative Ventures organization. Has key focus on engagement and retaining/rewarding top talent.
  • Regularly presents to, consults with and counsels' Nationwide officers, partner principles, board members and others on matters of significance impacting the viability, profitability and success of the business.


Other criteria, including leadership skills, competencies and experiences may take precedence.

Nationwide pays on a geographic-specific salary structure and placement within the actual starting salary range for this position will be determined by a number of factors including the skills, education, training, credentials and experience of the candidate; the scope, complexity and location of the role as well as the cost of labor in the market; and other conditions of employment. If a Sales job, Sales Incentives, based on performance goals are possible in addition to this range.

The national salary range for AVP, Portfolio, Development & Enablement - Alternative Ventures : $127,000.00-$248,000.00

The expected starting salary range for AVP, Portfolio, Development & Enablement - Alternative Ventures : $134,000.00 - $222,000.00
