Description

SUMMARY: The part-time Paramedic provider is a member of the Fire and Rescue department system. Paramedic providers perform Advanced and Basic Life Support services, and other related work as required. Work is often performed under emergency conditions and frequently involves considerable personal hazards. Work is performed both supervised and unsupervised. Paramedic providers report to the EMS/Paramedic Battalion Chiefs.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: The requirements for this position include, but are not limited to, those outlined below.   • Be punctual in reporting for work and prepared to work at the beginning of each shift for duty;
  • Assists in mitigation of emergency incidents including providing emergency care for the sick and injured;
  • Inspects, cleans, and maintains rescue apparatus and related equipment;
  • Inspects, maintains, and clean assigned fire stations and grounds,
  • Drives and operates emergency medical response apparatus;
  • Completes report and documentation as required by Department SOPs;
  • Attends and completes training as assigned by their supervisor and the Training Division;
  • Communicates with co-workers, volunteer fire and rescue personnel, and the public;
  • Reads and comprehends complex material.

Typical Qualifications

EDUCATION: High school diploma or GED required. Must be eighteen (18) years of age or older at the time of the application.

EXPERIENCE: Preferred that the providers are released Paramedic providers in the Lord Fairfax EMS Council Region or their respective EMS Council Region.

OTHER KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Part-time Paramedic providers shall have the ability to read and comprehend written documents including, but not limited to, technical reports, textbooks, polices, and regulations. They shall be able to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing. They shall be proficient in the principles and practice of emergency medical services (EMS). They shall be familiar with the operation of fire and rescue equipment utilized by the department. The part-time Paramedic providers shall have sufficient and adequate knowledge and use of typical EMS equipment such as AED's, heart monitors, suction units, stretchers, and other related EMS equipment. The provider should have adequate knowledge of patient care protocols and the image trend operating systems.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES AND/OR REGISTRATIONS: All part-time providers must possess the following certifications, licenses and or registrations:
  • NIMS ICS-100, ICS-200, IS-700, IS-800
  • Health Care Provider CPR certification.
  • Virginia Department of Fire Program EVOC Class I and II certifications;
  • Virginia Office EMS Paramedic or national Registry of EMT's Paramedic or Intermediate certification;
  • AHA ACLS and PALS certifications that are in current date; and
  • Possess and maintain a valid Driver's License. No County employee shall operate a vehicle on County business unless the employee has held a valid driver's license for a minimum of two (2) years.


Supplemental Information

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Requires considerable physical effort, working continuously with average and frequently with heavy weights. Performs long periods of physical exertion including, but not limited to, climbing, balancing, flexing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, walking, running, jumping, crawling, lifting, pushing, and hoisting. Includes performing work on uneven and potentially slippery surfaces and with varying degrees of light. Operated under stressful conditions.

ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS: The Paramedic provider will be working in a wide variety of conditions from the inside of building to outside of building. Theis will include extreme heat/cold with exposure to high and low temperatures, humid conditions, and other unfavorable weather conditions throughout the year. During response to emergency incidents, you may be exposed to byproduct of combustions, infectious disease, biological agents, and hazardous materials and conditions.
