STATUS: Full Time 80 Hours Kent General Hospital

SHIFT: Nights Sunday through Thursday 11 p.m.-7:30 a.m.

GENERAL SUMMARY:

Summary:
The Clinical Laboratory Scientist, under the direction of the laboratory director and supervision of the technical supervisor, provides day-to-day supervision of testing personnel and reporting of test results. In the absence of the director and technical supervisor, the general supervisor is responsible for the proper performance of all laboratory procedures and reporting of test results. The Clinical Laboratory Scientist (CLS) is able to perform all laboratory procedures in a prompt, accurate, and reliable manner according to established hospital and departmental policies and procedures. The Clinical Laboratory Scientist's responsibilities may include specimen collection and receipt, validation of specimen identification and appropriateness of sample type and size and processing according to special handling protocols. Assists with the evaluation of new instruments and products and with the writing of new procedures. The Clinical Laboratory Scientist participates in the teaching of new employees and students, with documentation of training and competency. The Clinical Laboratory Scientist may be assigned the duties of the charge tech, lead tech, or supervisor when necessary. Qualifies as the General Supervisor for high complexity testing under CLIA: 42 CFR 493.1459.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS & ACCOUNTABILITIES:

1. Under the direction of the laboratory director and supervision of the technical supervisor, provides day-to-day supervision of testing personnel and reporting of test results. In the absence of the director and technical supervisor, the general supervisor is responsible for the proper performance of all laboratory procedures and reporting of test results.
2. Independently performs all tasks according to established policies and procedures. Verifies patient identification throughout the entire testing process. Performs all required quality control and maintenance procedures per protocol with complete and accurate documentation.
3. Performs all procedures within prescribed turnaround times. Performs proficiency testing with thorough and timely documentation. Demonstrates ability to appropriately prioritize work at all times. Calls all critical/significant values as soon as available and documents action per protocol.
4. Follows through on all tests, procedures, or tasks left from the previous shift, and reports any incomplete assignments to assure continuity of procedures. Communicates all necessary information to assure work is completed without interruption of service. Demonstrates ability to effectively communicate with lab coworkers, physicians, other caregivers, patients, and vendors.
5. Demonstrates effective problem-solving and instrument troubleshooting skills. Recognizes deviation from expected results. Identifies, investigates, and communicates unusual or unexpected results or situations. Consults with lead tech, supervisor, or pathologist prior to releasing test results when test findings are inconsistent with the clinical picture, or whenever difficulties with the procedure are encountered.
6. Embraces a culture of safety by ensuring all Infection Control / Safety protocols are followed at all times. Ensures adequate staff is on site prior to departure at the end of each shift. Maintains cleanliness of own work area and equipment. Replaces all supplies used during the shift to assure volumes are sufficient for the following shift, and properly disposes of wastes. Rotates stock to ensure oldest supplies are used first.
7. Assists coworkers with difficult procedures/problems, including heavy workload. Provides instruction on new methods and instrumentation. Actively participates in staff and student education. Documents all instruction completed on assigned employees' training outlines accurately and completely before the end of the shift.
8. Demonstrates fiscal responsibility by utilizing supplies appropriately to avoid wastage.
9. All other duties as assigned within the scope and range of job responsibilities

REQUIRED MINIMUM EDUCATION AND CREDENTIAL:

  • Education Associate Degree

    Must meet one of the following CLIA defined education requirements to qualify as testing personnel for high complexity testing (CLIA: 42 CFR 493.1489): (1) Have earned a doctoral, master's or bachelor's degree in a chemical, physical, biological or clinical laboratory science, or medical technology from an accredited institution; (2) (i) Have earned an associate degree in a laboratory science, or medical laboratory technology from an accredited institution or - (ii) Have education and training equivalent to that specified in paragraph (2)(i) of this section that includes - (A) At least 60 semester hours, or equivalent, from an accredited institution that, at a minimum, include either - (1) 24 semester hours of medical laboratory technology courses; or (2) 24 semester hours of science courses that include - (i) Six semester hours of chemistry; (ii) Six semester hours of biology; and (iii) Twelve semester hours of chemistry, biology, or medical laboratory technology in any combination;
  • Credential MLS within 12 months of hire, if not already obtained

EXPERIENCE:

Required: None required for MLS/MT/CLS staff . At least 2 years of experience in high complexity testing required for MLT staff. Preferred: None required for MLS/MT/CLS staff. At least 2 years of experience in high complexity testing required for MLT staff.
