Position Summary

The Psychiatrist/Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner is responsible for psychiatric evaluations, prescription, and management of psychotropic medication, monitoring, and interpreting results of laboratory diagnostic tests, monitoring the side effects and interactions of medication, and providing education and direction to patients for medication self-administration. The psychiatrist also provides consultation to support and educate primary care providers as well as a large team of clinic therapists.

The population served includes Maryland and Washington DC Medicaid/Medicare population as well as the Latino immigrant population. Candidates who are bilingual in English & Spanish are strongly encouraged to apply.

Reportability

This position will report directly to the Vice President of Behavioral Health.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.

  • Evaluate, diagnose, and treat psychiatric, emotional, or behavioral conditions including personality disorders, suicidality, psychosis, mood disorders, anxiety disorders, substance use disorders, developmental disorders, sexual dysfunctions, attention deficit disorder, trauma- and stressor-related disorders, eating disorders, adjustment disorders, and others.
  • Establish a differential diagnosis and treatment plan.
  • Prescribe, direct, or administer psychotherapeutic treatment or medications to treat mental health conditions.
  • Monitor medication side effects and medication interactions.
  • Order and interpret results of laboratory diagnostic testing.
  • Order and interpret psychological testing.
  • Provide psychoeducation to patients and/or relatives about diagnosis, prognosis, treatment indications, risks, benefits, and alternative treatment options.
  • Collaborate with members of the multidisciplinary team, including therapists and family support workers, including providing case consultation and participating in case reviews.
  • Provide services to a minimum of 1.5 participants per hour.
  • Provide consultation as needed to primary care providers on patients receiving medical care at Mary's Center.
  • Participate in Mary's Center Continuous Quality Improvement process.
  • Document all services provided to clients and collateral contacts (family, school, doctor, etc.) in eCW electronic medical record.
  • Perform other services determined as necessary by the Director of Clinical Services.

Qualifications

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities -

  • Must possess an N.P., M.D., or D.O. and be Board-Certified in Psychiatry or Board-Eligible.
  • Must have current unrestricted licenses to practice in the District of Columbia and Maryland.
  • Experience practicing medicine in a community health clinic environment and/or experience in working with immigrant or low-income populations is desirable.

Language Requirements - Ability to communicate effectively in English is required. Additional language proficiency or fluency in Spanish is strongly preferred.

Physical Demands - Regularly required to sit; frequently required to reach with hands and arms, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch, talk or hear; must be able to lift objects up to twenty-five (25) pounds.

Work Environment - Mostly in a typical office and/or home setting with a quiet to moderate noise level. May be exposed to extreme cold, heat, and humidity due to outside weather conditions. Opportunity to work a hybrid schedule - remotely & onsite, as needed.
