The primary role of the laboratory technician is to conduct chemical and physical laboratory tests and accurately record results from testing of raw materials, compound samples, and finished hose products in a timely manner. The laboratory technician is also responsible for mixing, milling, curing, and testing lab batches created by the chemist and completing testing requested by other HBD facilities and maintaining the laboratory in a safe and clean condition.
Principle Duties and Responsibilities
Plans testing schedules to assure that all objectives and commitments are met
Organizes, prepares, and tests hoses, compounds, and raw materials for conformance to specifications
Uses sophisticated technical test equipment requiring PC literacy and ability to read charts and graphs
Analyzes test results and determines release status of raw material
Contacts production leadership, chemist, and/or Engineering and Technical managers when non-conforming materials/hoses are found
Records and maintains records of all testing and analysis data
Reviews all inputs to ensure accuracy/integrity before releasing data
Inspects lab equipment daily to ensure test data integrity
Assures that safety inspections are completed and that all safety guidelines and procedures followed without exception
Details suggestions for improving testing and analysis methods and for improving product quality, safety and reducing costs
Serves to train and coach newly assigned team members in the operation of equipment in accordance with work and safety instructions and production schedules
Gathers and weighs ingredients, mixes, and mill lab batches per request of chemist or other plants.
Skills/Qualifications
Knowledge of raw materials, processed rubber, and standard lab practices
Ability to analyze abnormality trends and make recommendations or countermeasures to resolve the abnormality problems. Resolutions to problems are not clearly defined, therefore, must rely on experience level and knowledge to make recommendations
Possesses basic skills to setup, load and unload material into sophisticated lab test equipment with little supervision
Possess basic computer data entry skills, including the ability to operate and load simple computer programs as required to run lab equipment
Ability to operate with speed and accuracy
Demonstrates team spirit, shows flexibility and positive attitude as an active team contributor
Demonstrates the ability to work in a dynamic and fast-paced environment
Requires strong communication, interpersonal, business, technical, analytical and planning skills
Demonstrates problem solving skills, is able to recognize and appropriately escalate issues when situations arise

Experience and Education Required
High School Diploma
2 years industrial manufacturing experience
Advanced skill with all MS Office products
Ability to demonstrate effective oral and written communication skills
Demonstrated decision making and strategic planning skills
Physical Demands
The ability to use hand tools on a regular basis
The ability to work in a non-temperature-controlled environment
The ability to wear personal protective gear correctly on a regular basis
The ability to stand continuously on a regular basis
The ability to exert medium force occasionally up to 50 lbs., and/or up to 20 lbs. of force frequently, and/or up to 10 lbs. of force constantly to move objects
