Agile Software Development Engineer

Job description

Position Description

If you are interested in supporting the Navy's #1 acquisition program and enjoy a challenging job which requires technical rigor and will build on your current level of expertise, Serco has an immediate opening that is a great opportunity for you!

Team Submarine's Submarine Program Offices are responsible for:

The acquisition of the COLUMBIA Class SSBN and for identifying, assembling, managing, directing, and coordinating the resources required for the R&D, design, construction, Test and Evaluation (T&E) and Live Fire Test and Evaluation (LFT&E) of the COLUMBIA Class. The program is a major defense acquisition program and is of significant political importance with Congress and the Office of the Secretary of Defense (OSD).

The NAVSEA 05Z5 Directorate is responsible for the design and development of the COLUMBIA class Integrated Power System that provides power distribution and propulsion for the future ballistic missile submarine.

Work with directly with the shipbuilder for identifying, assembling, managing, directing, and coordinating all resources required for the design, construction, and Test and Evaluation (T&E) of the future submarine's power system. They are also responsible for all of the Turbine Generators for generating electricity for all submarine and CVNs.

The future Ballistic Missile Submarine is the nation's top defense priority as the only survivable leg of the nuclear triad.

Serco has an immediate opening for an Agile Software Engineer who will assist the vendor in rapid development and debugging of critical software for the Advanced Current Compensation (ACC) module and other Integrated Power System (IPS) components as required. The necessary algorithms have been developed for the ACC, and the pre-production ACC was demonstrated successfully at the land-based test facility.

However, the production ACC underwent a tech refresh as a result of the pre-production COTS hardware becoming obsolete. To minimize the impact of future hardware obsolescence the vendor made changes to the implementation scheme to minimize the custom components of the ACC creating failures in the software.

The ACC is computationally intensive and timing is a critical aspect that must be maintained. The ACC is built on a VPX backplane and uses real-time Linux operating system to minimize latency between the various computational components on the VPX backplane.

These components include two high performance digital signal processors (DSPs), a single board computer (SBC), an Ethernet switch (eSwitch), and a custom interface board (IFB) with a System on a Chip (SoC) (an AMD product using PetaLinux for Xilinx processing systems) utilizing two SD cards for non-volatile storage of classified information.

This internal system must operate within the external timing constraints of the Integrated Propulsion System (IPS) components network.

Len Bunch (linkedin.com/in/leonardbunch) leads this team as a Navy veteran. The team has been recognized by the Navy and the industry for their outstanding contributions to the contract and program.
