Position Description

Reporting to the Director of Marketing and Communications, the Community Engagement Manager for Building Stories is responsible for building awareness and managing partner relationships around the National Building Museum's Building Stories exhibition. This grant-funded position through September 30, 2025, will ensure Building Stories is best servicing children and families and a destination for this audience. They will work closely with the Education Manager for Building Stories and ensure the exhibition, associated programs, educational initiatives, partnerships and online presence are robust, accurate and engaging. The successful candidate will possess experience with most or all of the following:
  • Online content strategy and development.
  • Social media production and management.
  • Email communications.
  • Electronic database and content management.

The Museum uses Altru, WordFly, and Extrulink for hosting its constituent relations (CRM), event calendar, tickets and email creation; and WordPress for the exhibition website (nbm.org). Experience with these platforms is strongly preferred.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Serve as the lead storyteller for Building Stories and the Building Readers Club across the Museum's digital platforms including website, social media channels, email marketing and other digital initiatives.
  • Create marketing and social media content and work closely with the Digital Marketing Manager to build a strong online presence for the exhibition.
  • Working with the Education Manager for Building Stories build awareness of and engagement with the Building Readers Club, a two-year reading and activity program, as well as the exhibition-themed birthday party, field trip, storytimes and free Saturdays.
  • In coordination with External Affairs & Development and Education staff, assist with marketing, cultivation and securing community partners and sponsors for the Big Draw, an annual festival associated with the exhibition, and other Building Stories events.
  • In coordination with External Affairs & Development and Education staff promote the exhibition and Museum externally through attendance and tabling at events and meetings and community festivals.
  • Build and steward relationships with exhibition partners including the DC Public Library, Downtown DC BID, Mount Vernon Triangle, DC Council, and working with the Education Manager, DC Public Schools, especially Title 1 schools.
  • Maintain exhibition internal and external web and event calendars.
  • Conduct tours of Building Stories and facilitate group and press visits to the exhibition.
  • Other duties as assigned.


Qualifications

  • Excellent written and communication skills.
  • Experience in digital marketing and editing content for the web.
  • Bachelor's degree in Communications, Marketing, Museum Studies, Technology, and/or related experience.
  • Experience with social media platforms.
  • Highly organized and professional demeanor.
  • Interest in architecture and design is a plus.
  • Sense of humor is a must!
