Public Relations and Communications Manager

Job description

Planned Parenthood of Maryland (PPM) is a not-for-profit family planning agency that provides high-quality, affordable reproductive health care for women, men, and teens. Our mission is to enable all Marylanders to have access to a wide range of high-quality, affordable reproductive health care services. We help individuals make informed decisions about their reproductive health, family planning options, and sexuality.

The Public Relations and Communications Manager is responsible for developing and managing internal and external messaging as well as media, communications, and digital strategies, including, but not limited to, overseeing message development, press relations, and coordinating event programming. They collaborate and provide communications support across teams to further the policy and political objectives of PPM through consistent, timely and moving messages and communications tactics.

Essential Responsibilities:
    • Manages communication strategy media relations, and programs.
    • Manages events relevant to the PA/PR department, with interdepartmental collaboration.
    • Develop strategic workplans that work collaboratively with other PPM departments.
    • Develop and manage robust and consistent media relations strategy.
    • Coordinate with PPM's Leadership Team as needed for local/regional media relations.
    • Support Leadership Team with any relevant talking points or public facing speaking engagements.
    • Develop strategic opportunities to elevate PPM's mission and expertise in the community.
    • Develop and maintain relationships with national, local and state media.
    • Build and manage relationships with communications staff in partner organizations and affinity groups.
    • Participate in coalition partner meetings as needed.
    • Serve as accountability partner to Public Affairs team to ensure excellence for all services and programs.
    • Assist with digital strategy and support communications staff member on implementation.
    • Develop briefing memos and any relevant materials.
    • Staff PPFA and affiliate workgroups as necessary.
    • Oversee any relevant contractors or vendors.
    • Perform other duties as assigned.


Secondary Functions:
    • Must be a team player, willing to learn & grow, creative, and energetic.
    • Represent PPM strategic interests through participation in local, state, and national organizations as requested.
    • Ability to communicate effectively and in a friendly, professional manner with clients, donors, vendors and other community members, whether by phone, email or in person.
    • Maintain positive, productive working relationships with all PPM and grant staff, and work cooperatively on interdepartmental tasks (may be non-educational in nature).


Qualifications:
    • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university preferred but not required.
    • Minimum of 3 years experience as a communications professional.
    • Ability to work across organizations and departments under a united strategy.
    • Excellent organizational skills, computer skills, including Access, Excel, Word, Power Point, Publisher and Social Media.
    • Professional understanding of crisis management.


Other Skills:
    • Demonstrated ability to source solutions, build partnerships, and connect communities for a common cause.
    • Ability to work outside normal business hours, including weekends as events dictate.
    • Familiarity with digital and social media strategies, platforms and tools.
    • Knowledge of diverse groups, working within a multicultural workforce; sensitivity and appreciation to cultural differences is required.
    • Excellent written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills.
    • Able to communicate effectively, verbally and in writing, to a diverse range of audiences in a variety of settings.
    • Ability to meet deadlines, work under pressure, and be an independent decision-maker when needed.
    • Ability to work on multiple ongoing projects, responsibilities, and relationships.
    • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Programs (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint).
    • Able to travel as needed (mostly within the state).


    • Physical Demand:
    • Able to lift 25 pounds for the occasional need.

    • Will be exposed to confidential information whose disclosure would be contrary to the best interest of the agency, facility and would be a breach of professional ethics.

    • Has contact with employees, and outside agencies, furnishing and obtaining information.
    • Requires a cooperative and courteous attitude, as well as excellent phone and communication skills.


    • Licenses:
    • Possession of a valid motor vehicle operator's license and willingness to use personal vehicle in the course of employment.

    • Long-Term Disability: 60% of your monthly base wages for prolonged illness or injury. With a maximum monthly benefit of $10,000.00. This benefit is paid for by the Company.
    • PTO Accrued 1st year: 18 Days.

    • 401(k) Retirement Plan: Eligibility to participate is the First of the Month following your first day of Employment. After one year PPM will match 100% of employee contributions up to the first 3% and 50% of the next 2%. Fidelity Investment is our 401k provider, and they will mail an enrollment packet to your home address.
