Job Title: Warehouse Worker

Location: Hagerstown, MD Corps

Position Type: full-time, non-exempt

Pay Rate: $15.00/hour

About this opportunity:

The Salvation Army, an internationally recognized non-profit, faith-based organization, has a job opening for a Warehouse Worker at the Thrift Store in Hagerstown, Maryland. The Warehouse Worker is responsible foroperating a baler machine to secure, package and bind large volumes of clothing, loading and unloading trucks, lifting of heavy objects on a regular basis. The Warehouse Worker will assist in maintaining the neatness and orderliness of the warehouse area, assist with loading, unloading, and sorting donations; moving donations and other materials into the warehouse; assist in the set-up, clean up and break down of the warehouse.

Qualified candidates will:
  • Load and fluff clothes in the bailer machine to secure a solid bail of clothing with wire.
  • Operate forklift to transport bail to storage truck.
  • Unload trucks of donated items being delivered to the warehouse.
  • Recycle cardboard boxes and cuts cardboard for use with the bailer machine.
  • Store shoes in storage areas.
  • Monitor the warehouse entrances and dock area to deter theft.
  • Inspect donated items briefly to ensure they can be used according to established policies and procedures
  • Explain policy to customers regarding the types of items that can be accepted.
  • Prepare donation receipts for customers; ensures the accuracy and completeness of the same.
  • Maintain good relationship with donors to promote a favorable image of The Salvation Army.
  • Unload donations from truck upon arrival at warehouse; distributes items to appropriate locations in the warehouse.
  • Load truck of items to be taken to the dump.
  • Receive, inspect and sort donated items such as clothes, shoes, household items, bric-a-brack, etc. according to the category and condition.
  • Select items suitable for store display and distribute same to appropriate area for further sorting and/or pricing; discard items in accordance with established procedures; and tag items with specially coded tickets and/or prices in accordance with established procedures.
  • Lift, carry, and/or haul donations into truck; pack items in truck in a manner that maximizes use of space, protect items from damage, and ensure safety.
  • Ride in a Salvation Army truck on a scheduled route in order to pick-up donated items.
  • Assist in navigating driver to destinations by reading a map and/or hand-written directions.
  • Perform routine maintenance of the truck; checks fluid levels on a regular basis; and provides repair work, as needed.
What we are looking for in you:

Education and Experience

High school diploma or G.E.D.; And two (2) years of experience in sorting, receiving, storing, loading, and unloading of materials in a warehouse or store setting; OR any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions

Work requires the ability to lift and carry and/or push/pull heavy (over 50lbs.) materials, supplies and equipment frequently. Heavy mobility duties are usually performed by combinations of standing, walking, climbing ladders or steps, bending, reaching, or transporting merchandise on frequent change basis relieved by fewer periods of sitting in a vehicle.

WORKING CONDITION

Work is performed in a stock room, warehouse, or store environment where there are discomforts associated with changes in weather. There are occasional discomforts associated with noise, crowds, dust, lint, chemical odors, and the like.
