THE ACADEMIC CENTER FOR EXCELLENCE

The Academic Center for Excellence (ACE) is a newly established unit that represents a merger of existing advising and support units within the Office of Undergraduate Studies. ACE will offer high-impact academic and career advising and support services to ensure that undergraduate students successfully persist and graduate, at minimum, in accordance with the goals set in the University's strategic plan.

BASIC FUNCTION:

The purpose of this position is to provide integrated academic and career advice and support services to undergraduate students, with a special emphasis on freshman and sophomore students in the College of Arts and Sciences.

SUPERVISORY AUTHORITY:

Involves no responsibility or authority for the direction of others.

NATURE AND SCOPE:

Internal contacts may include senior administrators, faculty, students, and staff.

External contacts may include parents, caregivers, consultants, and the general public.

Up to 40% telework (approximately 2 days per week) may be offered during non-peak periods.

PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES:
  • Provide comprehensive high-impact academic advisement and career planning services to first and second-year students.
  • Effectively communicate information about programs of study, graduation requirements, policies and procedures, and resources available to students.
  • Actively monitor and assess student's academic performance and progress to effectively create an outreach plan.
  • Engage students in academic and career planning assessments, interpret results, and assist student with developing a plan that leads to student success and on-time graduation.
  • Document student interactions, issue alerts, and maintain detailed records. Identifies and implements intervention as necessary to support student academic progress and career development.
  • Provide course selection guidance, develop, and facilitate student success presentations, and support other career and academic programming.
  • Collect and analyze data and produce regular reports on student engagement activities.
  • Support the development of best practices and tools for advising implementation and management.
  • Work closely with Enrollment Management staff (i.e., Registrar, Admission, Financial Aid, and Bursar).
  • Participate in department/council meetings and professional development activities.
  • Work collaboratively with the Center for Career and Professional Success to assist students with creating a career development plan, which may include career assessment, career and internship goal setting, major selection, job search assistance, and resume support.
  • Perform other duties or projects as assigned.

CORE COMPETENCIES:
  • Must have a desire to support and work with Black students and underrepresented populations.
  • Knowledge of policies and procedures in higher education, academic programs, career clusters and industry trends.
  • Knowledge of student information systems, data management systems, career management systems, Microsoft Office Suite, and other academic and/or career advising tools and techniques.
  • Knowledge of personality and/or interest assessments with skills in translating interests into academic and career plans that lead to the achievement of specific goals.
  • Ability to problem solve, manage difficult situations, and maintain a high level of professionalism and customer service.
  • Excellent organizational, verbal, and written communication skills.
  • Ability to effectively manage a caseload, multi-task, and prioritize work tasks.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with all stakeholders.
  • Ability to work well in teams and individually.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Bachelor's degree with two or more years of relevant work experience in the public or private sectors.

PREFERRED REQUIREMENTS:

Master's degree with 1 or more years of relevant work experience within an academic setting or University/ College.
