Summary See below for important information regarding this job. Responsibilities Serves as delivery driver, materials handler, and security screener for the Defense Supply Center Columbus base. Drives trucks with gross vehicle weights from 10,000 lbs up to 26,000 lbs. Transports materials, equipment and supplies throughout the Installation and on public roads for local hauls. Assists with loading and unloading materials adhering to capacity requirements. Performs driver s maintenance in accordance with established rules and regulations. Operates receiving dock to receive and direct trucks to unloading bay. Operates security screening (X-ray) equipment and employs established procedures to prevent deadly or dangerous objects or substances from being transported into the base populace. Requirements Conditions of Employment Qualifications To qualify for a Materials Handler (Motor Vehicle Operator), your resume and supporting documentation must support: Applicants will be rated in accordance with the Office of Personnel Management Qualification Standard for Trades and Labor Occupations. Although a specific length of time and experience is not required, you must meet any screen-out element listed, and show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties at the level for which you are applying. Emphasis is placed on how you gained the quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time, and the required ability or potential to perform the job. Applicants who do not meet the screen-out element (SOE) will be eliminated from further competition. The SOE and minimum qualifications for this position is: Perform the common tasks of the job to be filled, but under close supervision, operating vehicles with a gross vehicle weight of 10,000 pounds or less, such as a pickup, van, stake truck; transport and deliver supplies, cargo, mail, freight, and equipment to various locations and work sites; use computers to process receipts and stow materials. Complete work assignments within general warehousing plan with instructions on methods, procedures, or techniques to use. Selective Placement Factor: Must possess a current valid state driver's license and a Commercial Drivers' License (CDL) Class B for vehicles that they will be required to drive before being considered for the position. You must submit a copy of your CDL, Class B license. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional, philanthropic, religious, spiritual, community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Physical Effort: Performs work on hard surfaces and in work areas that require standing, stooping, bending, sitting, and walking, working in tiring and uncomfortable positions, and may be required to work at a rapid pace for long periods. Exerts moderate physical effort during the frequent handling of objects weighing up to 40 pounds and the occasional handling of heavier objects which are moved with material handling equipment, or with assistance of other workers. Some physical exertion may be required to back vehicles to docks, moving up and down loading ramps and pushing loaded carts. Working Conditions: Work is performed inside or outside in areas that may be hot, damp, cold, drafty, or poorly lighted. Drivers work mostly outside and operate vehicles in all kinds of weather and traffic and are exposed to the danger of serious accidents. They are exposed to dirt and fumes, and to the possibility of cuts, bruises and broken bones as a result of accidents while driving or from falling objects when loading and unloading the vehicle. Driving is done on and off base in all types of driving conditions. Work may expose individuals to the potential danger of explosives and biological or chemical contaminants and may require wearing personal protective gear such as steel-toed shoes, leather or rubber gloves, aprons and dust masks.
