Job description

Summary

This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific individual eligibility requirements in accordance with VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment. Program Approval, award amount (up to $200,000) and eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after complete review of the EDRP application.

Basic Requirements:

Applicants pending the completion of training or license requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met
Currently employed physician(s) in VA who met the requirements for appointment under the previous qualification standard at the time of their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements of the occupation
Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy
Education: Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine
Licensure and Registration: Physicians must possess current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia
The physician must maintain current registration in the state of licensure if this is a requirement for continuing active, current licensure
Residency Training: Physicians must have completed residency training, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification
(NOTE: VA physicians involved in academic training programs may be required to be board certified for faculty status.) Approved residencies are: (1) Those approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), b) OR (2) Those approved by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA),OR (3) Other residencies (non-US residency training programs followed by a minimum of five years of verified practice in the United States), which the local Medical Staff Executive Committee deems to have provided the applicant with appropriate professional training and believes has exposed the physician to an appropriate range of patient care experiences
Residents currently enrolled in ACGME/AOA accredited residency training programs and who would otherwise meet the basic requirements for appointment are eligible to be appointed as "Physician Resident Providers" (PRPs)
PRPs must be fully licensed physicians (i.e., not a training license) and may only be appointed on an intermittent or fee-basis
PRPs are not considered independent practitioners and will not be privileged; rather, they are to have a "scope of practice" that allows them to perform certain restricted duties under supervision
Additionally, surgery residents in gap years may also be appointed as PRPs
English Language Proficiency: Physicians appointed to direct patient-care positions must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C
7402(d) and 7407(d)
Additional Requirement: Preferred Experience: Board eligible or board certified in Oncology or Hematology/Oncology

Physical Requirements: The position is a combination of activity and sitting for periods up to an hour with movement in between
Bending, walking and stooping are required
The position requires the ability to read printed material and distinguish colors such as reading and computer screens, the ability to accurately perceive depth so as to move around work space safely and to appropriately make contact with patients and staff, and the ability to meet visual requirements to work up close to a computer screen, and talk on the telephone
Lifting and carrying (up to 45 lbs.); pushing or pulling (1 hour); reaching above shoulder; use of fingers; both hands required; walking (up to 4 hours); standing (up to 4 hours); repeated bending (up to 2 hours); ability for rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously; near vision correctable at 13" to 16" to Jaeger 1 to 4; far vision correctable in one eye to 20/20 and to 20/40 in the other eye; hearing (aid permitted); clear speech; mental and emotional stability.

Provides direct hands-on patient care including evaluation and treatment of the hematology/oncology patients, determination whether patients need to be admitted to the hospital or managed in the outpatient setting, and management of chronic disease.
Comprehensive initial medical/psychosocial history and physical examination.
Order appropriate diagnostic tests and work-up.
Review and interpret diagnostic tests and take appropriate action.
Formulate and record diagnostic impressions.
Refer patients with appropriate consultations both within the VA and in the community.
Provide clinical guidance to patients, families and other heath care providers over the phone, secure messaging or through the mail to coordinate health care, educate and give advice.
Ensure accurate documentation of medical assessments, interactions and observations.
Responsible for supervising and teaching medical residents and students.
May be required to oversee mid-level practitioners, such as nurse practitioners or physician assistants.
Enter orders into CPRS for medications, consults, testing etc.
Demonstrates current clinical practice.
Attend Medical Center and community meetings, seminars, conferences.
Establishes inter-personal and intra-departmental relationships to enhance optimal patient care Demonstrates competent and effective oral and written communication and provides appropriate patient/family member teaching and education.
Maintains familiarity and compliance with hospital infection prevention policies and procedures, ensuring the use of antiseptic methods of all in-clinic procedures.
Other duties as assigned.
Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, 8:00 A.M.
- 4:30 P.M., with potential for some weekends, as well as on-call coverage; however, subject to change, depending on the needs of the service/medical center."
