Senior Marketing Communications Manager

The Senior Marketing Communications Manager is responsible for developing marketing content and supervising the Content and Graphic Design teams and outside resources retained for specific projects (agencies, freelancers, etc.). In addition to writing and editing, this individual maintains oversight of all firm marketing content and ensures the firm's content and visual aesthetics are coordinated and synergistic while adhering to content and brand guidelines. The ability to exercise independent judgment in solving day-to-day problems and balance shifting team priorities is critical. The Senior Marketing Communications Manager maintains professionalism and strict confidentiality in all client and firm matters.

Katten offers a hybrid work model, allowing the flexibility to work both on-site and remotely on a regular basis (KattenFlex). This position may be located in either our Chicago, New York, or Washington, D.C. office.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include, but may not be limited to, the following. Other duties may be requested and/or assigned.   • Oversee the creation and regular revision of marketing content including that which is printed, lives in online outlets, and is distributed via email automation. This content includes, but is not limited to, firm and practice area brochures, internal communications, client advisories, firm website, and other projects.
  • Provide guidance on content development for various social media channels while staying current on best practices for positioning and maximizing engagement.
  • Create social media campaigns that amplify published thought leadership and other news-worthy firm initiatives, events, and matters.
  • Manage the retention and supervise the work of outside resources (agencies, freelancers, etc.) on the production of internal and external content and other thought leadership pieces.
  • Create an editorial calendar and timeline for the firm website content and facilitate regular audits of existing materials to ensure consistent updates.
  • Ensure consistency of messaging and appropriate tone and style for all content distribution channels.
  • Responsible for managing and updating the firm's content and design style guides.
  • Write, edit, and proofread content.
  • Coordinate and supervise the design and content production processes and provide creative direction for the Design and Content teams and outside vendors/consultants, as appropriate.
  • Manage the oversight, ongoing implementation, training and vendor relationship with the Passle digital thought leadership platform.
  • Become proficient in the use of the firm's internal, custom project management tool and provide oversight of the day-to-day management of various requests and tasks.
  • Facilitate and manage special projects, as requested.

Supervisory Responsibilities
  • Supervise and mentor a team of writers and graphic designers. Manage engagement with and scheduling of outside resources (agencies and freelancers) when necessary. Oversee, coordinate and delegate certain work within the Marketing area as outlined by the Director of Marketing. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the firm's policies and applicable laws.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Bachelor's degree in Journalism, Marketing or Communications and a minimum of ten years' experience in a writing or marketing communications position is required, preferably in an Am Law 100 law firm.
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills. Ability to convey technical capabilities and legal expertise in a compelling, business-centric way.
  • Ability to maintain effective relationships with a diverse group of peers, attorneys, clients, business professionals and outside resources. Must communicate with diplomacy, efficiently give and follow written and verbal instructions, provide information clearly and be able to effectively solicit information from others.
  • Proactive with excellent troubleshooting, creative problem solving and follow-through skills. Exhibit high degree of initiative and critical-thinking skills in exercising independent judgment in order to manage multiple priorities simultaneously in a fast-paced, deadline-driven, detailed-oriented work environment.
  • Ability to identify, define and analyze issues and problems and to recommend and implement solutions.
  • Strong managerial skills to effectively interact and communicate with direct reports, provide clear instruction, direction and training, determine work priorities and coordinate the activities of a team. Must be able to use independent judgement to solve daily issues as they arise.
  • Sophisticated sense of brand and brand management, visual aesthetics, and design.
  • Ability to understand and support firm goals, services, culture, and strategy in order to represent the firm in a positive, professional manner.
  • Excellent technological skills including proficiency in Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Adobe Acrobat. Other software skills, including Adobe Creative Suite and InDesign are a plus.
  • Ability to occasionally retrieve and distribute marketing/desktop publishing materials, written documentation or office supplies weighing up to 20 pounds.
  • Required to work towards deadlines; must be able to work more than 37.5 hours per week (35 hours per week in New York) as necessary.
