Assistant Professor of Economics

Job description

Under the general direction of the Dean of Delaplaine School of Business (DSB) we invite applications for a full-time tenure-track position at the assistant professor rank. The successful candidate is expected to teach multiple courses that include: principles of economics, intermediate economics, managerial economics (MBA) and other elective courses. A Ph.D. in economics is required, but candidates who have reached "ABD" status will be considered too. The candidate must demonstrate an ability or potential for quality teaching, scholarly research, and service. Candidates with teaching/research interests in two or more of the following areas are particularly encouraged to apply:

* History of Economic Thought

* Industrial Organization

* Law and Economics

* Health Economics

Essential Duties include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

Teaching/Facilitation: The selected candidate is expected to:

* Teach seven sections (3+4, or 4+3) over Fall and Spring semesters as assigned.

* Demonstrate an ability or potential for quality teaching, scholarly research, and service.

* Plan course syllabus and assignments for semester of study to meet Hood College and Delaplaine School of Business (DSB) curriculum requirements utilizing a variety of teaching techniques including both in-person and online classes.

* Evaluate students' learning styles, interests, aptitudes, temperament, and individual characteristics to determine suitable level of instruction and assignments.

* Instruct students in course content and provides learning opportunities in and out of the classroom to achieve course objectives.

* Encourage class participation and provides assistance as appropriate to students in completing class assignments.

* Manage classroom interactions and establishes and maintains a climate that encourages learning.

* Critique performance on various assignments to measure the quality of learning, to build thinking and analytical skills, to challenge students' assumptions, and to reinforce concepts, which may include practical application of new skills.

* Maintain regular office hours and contact with students as appropriate.

* Work with student to address problems and resolve issues.

* Accompany students on field trips or other off-campus learning opportunities as appropriate.

* Determine grades for assignments and for overall achievement in class. Provides appropriate documentation of grades to students and department as appropriate.

* Perform other job-related duties as assigned.

Research

* Conducts field specific research to enhance general body of knowledge and provide publication opportunities.

* Presents research findings and other academic papers at national or professional conferences.

Service

* Support and participates in Hood College and DSB committees and/or professional organizations to develop professional partnerships and meet academic needs of the institution.

* Support Hood College and DSB initiatives to recruit and retain talented students.

* Be an active member of the Hood College and DSB community.

Education and/or Experience

A Ph.D. in economics is required, but ABD will be considered. Candidates should have teaching experience. A familiarity with small, liberal arts College would be an additional aspect in the selection process.

Technology Skills

Proficient in MS Office tools (Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint), e-mail and Internet. Ability to learn new applications quickly including organization-wide information systems and department-specific software applications.
