About the Youth & College Division

The NAACP Youth & College Division serves as the premier institution for young people to develop the skills they need to meet various challenges that face African Americans and other youth of color. NAACP Youth & College Division engage in social justice activism across the country, addressing issues at the local, state, and national level. By expanding engagement among key demographics, engaging youth leaders in issue-based campaigns, and developing youth leaders to advocates, we aim to: inform youth of the problems affecting African Americans and other racial and ethnic minorities; advance the economic, educational, social, and political status of African Americans and other racial and ethnic minorities, and their harmonious cooperation with other peoples; stimulate an appreciation of the African Diaspora and other people of color's contribution to civilization; and develop an intelligent, effective youth leadership.

About the Racial Equity Fellow, Race and Justice

The NAACP seeks a highly motivated and passionate individual to serve as a Racial Equity Fellow, Race and Justice, Youth & College Division. This full-time fellowship offers a unique opportunity for emerging leaders committed to racial justice and equity to actively contribute to transforming the criminal justice system and addressing systemic racism.

This role is responsible for conducting research, advocating for policy reforms, and engaging in community mobilization to promote fair and equitable treatment for communities of color impacted by the criminal justice system. The ideal candidate has a firm understanding of strategic opportunities to advance policy and/or expand programs that will address important criminal justice issues impacting the Black community. The fellow collaborates in the development of large-scale strategies for addressing polices that eliminate race-based discrimination in policing, courts, and incarceration within the Black community, which will include supporting programmatic and advocacy-based interventions around such issues as addressing racial violence by police, ending mass incarceration, and fair federal judiciary.

The fellow is tasked with the coordination of various research projects and initiatives and will serve as a resource to NAACP committees and Youth & College unit, by providing issue-specific guidance on industry best practices and advocacy strategies that lead toward sustainable and transformational change toward economic justice. In addition, the fellow will support program development assessment and evaluation.

RESPONSIBILITIES/DUTIES

  • Conduct in-depth research on the intersection of race, criminal justice, and systemic inequalities, identifying key issues, trends, and disparities affecting marginalized communities;
  • Analyze policies, legislation, and court decisions to inform advocacy efforts;
  • Develop and implement advocacy strategies to influence policymakers, legislators, and criminal justice stakeholders at local, state, and national levels;
  • Collaborate with the NAACP's legal and strategy team, youth & college units, and community partners to advocate for reforms that address racial biases, excessive sentencing, police misconduct, and other systemic issues;
  • Build relationships and partnerships with community-based organizations, activists, and impacted individuals to foster grassroots support for criminal justice reform;
  • Organize and participate in national programs, workshops, and town halls to educate, empower, and mobilize youth & college members around issues of racial equity in the criminal justice system;
  • Contribute to the development of educational materials, toolkits, reports, and press releases to raise awareness about racial disparities and promote policy solutions;
  • Collaborate with the communications team to leverage various media platforms, including social media, to amplify the NAACP's message and engage a broader audience;
  • Facilitate workshops and training sessions on racial equity, criminal justice, and advocacy skills for youth college chapters of the NAACP;
  • Empower young leaders to become change agents in their communities by providing them with the necessary tools, knowledge, and resources to effectively advocate for racial justice; and
  • Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

Educational/Professional Experience

  • Bachelors' degree in a relevant or equivalent experience preferred;
  • Minimum of two to three years' experience in relevant fields; including direct industry experience, experience in non-profit, policy, advocacy, or other civil rights organizations. Internships and fellowships are considered acceptable professional experience as well;
  • Demonstrated effectiveness in written and oral communication;
  • Experience in engaging in external partnerships and collaborations with foundations, non-profits, corporations, and other key stakeholders;
  • Provide units and strategic partners with one-on-one technical assistance and support on developing, implementing and evaluating organizational plans;
  • Proven background in project management, strong conflict resolution, and problem-solving skills;
  • Proven ability to support cutting-edge research projects and engage with broad diverse audiences; and
  • Ability and willingness to travel and work non-standard hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays, as needed.
