What are Trust Fund Positions?


Trust Fund positions are unique to the Smithsonian. They are paid for from a variety of sources, including the Smithsonian endowment, revenue from our business activities, donations, grants and contracts. Trust employees are not part of the civil service, nor does trust fund employment lead to Federal status. The salary ranges for trust positions are generally the same as for federal positions and in many cases trust and federal employees work side by side. The Smithsonian's National Zoo and Conservation Biology Institute (NZCBI) is a leader in the conservation, care, exhibition, and research of wildlife and habitats. This position is located at NZCBI Headquarters 3001 Connecticut Avenue NW Washington DC 20008. It is accessible via mass transit, and onsite employee parking is currently available at no cost. Hybrid Telework Schedule Eligible, however, a minimum of 3-days onsite per week is required due to the nature of the position. Additionally, there is a requirement for this position to regularly visit NZCBI's Conservation Biology Institute campus located in Front Royal, VA.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • The incumbent will serve as the primary point of contact for the animal management camera system which is built on a modern CCTV platform. This will include the management of servers, desktops, and application; installation and maintenance of camera hardware; and project management with preferred vendor.
  • In partnership with SI/OCIO, the incumbent will manage the technical aspects, hardware, and project management of the campus-wide 2-way radio system.
  • The incumbent will manage the NZCBI desktop/laptop replacement program using the established SI standard baseline configuration.
  • The incumbent will manage technical aspects of specialized system (i.e. - lighting systems, sensor systems, etc.).
  • The incumbent will provide technical guidance and support to audio visual systems throughout NZCBI campuses.
  • Collaborate with SI/OCIO to develop specialized configurations for special systems (i.e. - digital signage, etc.) and special hardware considerations.
  • Coordinates with SI/OCIO concerning local network outages, server maintenance and upgrades, network access issues, new construction plans, and the configuration, testing, deployment, and maintenance of a wide variety of hardware devices and software applications critical to the production environment at NZCBI.
  • Create new network and email accounts using the Microsoft Active Directory Users and Groups administration tool.
  • Provide technical support for computer devices to NZCBI users.
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
  • Comprehensive knowledge of CCTV system equipment to include: cameras, servers, transcoders, etc.
  • Knowledge of audio visual and teleconference hardware including projectors, audio systems, displays, associated cabling and control system infrastructure.
  • Knowledge or ability to learn technical features of 2-way radio system
  • Comprehensive knowledge of computer systems sufficient to install configure and troubleshoot complex hardware or software issues including but not limited to: Standard Dell desktop and laptop computers; wide range of external peripheral devices; application/software tools.
  • Knowledge of network design practices, IP addressing scheme, wire closets, switches, VLAN configurations, and Microsoft Active Directory client sufficient to: configure systems and add to appropriate domain/networks.
  • Troubleshoot network connectivity problems back to network switches; work effectively and efficiently with OCIO NOC staff to ensure proper configuration; etc.
  • Knowledge of customer service and support principles, methods, and tracking tools.
