Job description

SeClienthing for a family nurse practitioner licensed to work in Ohio with at least one year of NP work experience in primary care to provide on-site services on a full-time basis to the female population at this correctional facility. Schedule is weekdays only (no evenings, weekends, or holidays) and has some flexibility based on needs of facility, but core hours are typically between 7:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. An on-site interview will be required. Assignment is projected to last 3 months but may be extended based on need and mutual good fit.

  • Monitors progress of and intervenes in the course of chronic illnesses, using DRC policies and protocols for guidance
  • Inoculates or vaccinates against communicable diseases & prescribes medications or administers treatment of acute and chronically ill patients & performs minor surgery as training & competency allows
  • Performs routine physical exams of patients to determine control or status of chronic conditions & diagnoses new conditions
  • Evaluates patients for the necessity of specialty referral consultations inside or outside the institution & reviews said consult reports for the recommendations, approving or disapproving accordingly
  • Orders & reviews the results of laboratory, x-ray, & other diagnostic testing as appropriate
  • With the Chief Medical Officer (CMO), facilitates the completion of medical reclassification & requests for non-formulary medications as necessary
  • Performs routine & emergency medical care of patients as scheduled
  • Examines, diagnoses & treats patients within scope of practice, as identified by the State of Ohio Nursing Board, as applicable
  • Conducts rounds on infirmary patients as deemed appropriate by the CMO
  • Writes up medical information gathered during patient interviews according to DRC Office of Correctional Healthcare guidelines, policies, protocols & related American Correctional Association standards currently in practice, documenting all assessments & diagnostic impressions, as well as any other treatment plans & follow-up parameters
  • Cooperates with CMO medical quality oversight & accept suggestions, redirection, and guidance
  • Attends professional institutional-specific meetings as requested by the Warden, Deputy Warden, or CMO
  • Attends the monthly institution medical Continuous Quality Improvement meetings as an active participant
