Clinical Athletic Trainer

Job description

The Clinical Athletic Trainer will work with a multidisciplinary team, including sports medicine Orthopaedic surgeons and primary care sports medicine providers to provide direct patient care. The Clinical Athletic Trainer will be responsible for working with the Sports Medicine team to evaluate, treat and modify treatment for a wide variety of patients in the Sports Medicine Department within the Division of Pediatric Orthopedics and Sports Medicine. Other responsibilities include home exercise therapy education, brace/crutch fitting, casting, patient education, facilitation of necessary ancillary services, and participation in research within the sports medicine field.

In collaboration with the Sports Medicine Team, the Clinical Athletic Trainer will develop and implement athletic training outreach services to local high schools and sports associations, including pre-participation evaluations, athletic training room evaluations, and game and event coverage.

The Clinical Athletic Trainer will work closely with the Sports Medicine Team to provide education to athletes, coaches, parents, and members of the sports community on relevant sports medicine topics.

The Clinical Athletic Trainer will work closely with the Sports Medicine Team to help athletes with return to play evaluation and exercise programs.

The Clinical Athletic Trainer will work closely with the Sports Medicine Team to provide injury prevention evaluation and intervention to athletes, including one-on-one or group education and exercise programs. This includes working with the Sports Medicine team in the Motion Capture Lab and use of advanced technology

Minimum Education

Bachelor's Degree in athletic training. Master's degree preferred as the position will be involved in research, education, and marketing efforts. (Required)

Minimum Work Experience

1 year athletic training experience at a minimum (Required)

3 years athletic training experience in a clinical setting (Preferred)

Required Licenses and Certifications

Maryland Athletic Training License or eligible; Evaluation and Treatment protocol with supervising physician approved by Maryland Board of Medicine immediately after start (Required) Certification by the Board of Certification (BOC) in good standing (Required)

BLS CPR/AED certified (Required)

Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) (Preferred)

Functional Movement Screen Certification ( FMSC) (Preferred)

Functional Accountabilities

Patient Treatment and Services

* Evaluate new and return patients, include present history, past medical/surgical history, medications, and allergies; obtain information regarding radiology, labs and past work-up/information.

* Assist physician in making physical therapy and radiology referrals; order x-rays.

* Develop targeted diagnosis and management plan and inform patient/family; dictate patient encounters.

* Present clear, concise and well formulated information to physicians.

* Measure and fit crutches and braces based on treatment plans.

* Assist to coordinate care and patient follow-up.

* Apply and remove basic and specialized bracing, plaster and fiber casts.

* Work closely with the Sports Medicine Team to help athletes with return to play evaluation and exercise programs. This includes providing injury prevention evaluation and intervention to athletes, including one-on-one or group education and exercise programs.

* Participate in the Motion Capture Lab using advanced technology, assisting with data collection and implementation of various sports evaluation protocols.

Patient/Family Education

* Ensure appropriate post-op, follow-up care and coordination of ancillary services; educate patient and families regarding home exercise therapy and use of braces and crutches.

* Create and develop education and training documents for patients and families regarding sports injury, prevention and diagnosis

Athletic Training Outreach Program

* Organize and implement an afternoon training room at a local high school.

* Establish working relationship with athletic director, coaches, and parents.

* Consult physician appropriately for questions and concerns.

* Active in game coverage

* Provide education to athletes, coaches, parents, and members of the sports community on relevant sports topics

Resident Training

* Assist and or/train, residents in the proper application techniques.
