About the Department:

The English department at GMU houses a wide array of programs, including a BA in English with seven concentrations, a BFA in Creative Writing, several MA programs, and three terminal degrees, including a PhD in Writing and Rhetoric.

About the Position:

The person in this term faculty position would join the faculty in the Writing and Rhetoric concentration and Professional and Technical Writing Minor, which are distinct from the Composition Program and focus primarily on professional and technical writing at the BA and MA levels. This person would also teach Mason Core (general education) classes on Ethical AI.

Responsibilities:

Responsibilities include teaching ENGH 210: Equitable AI as well as our core undergraduate course in professional and technical writing (English 388). There may be opportunities to teach additional technical communication courses at the undergraduate level. Annual appointments will depend on budget and performance. The incumbent may be asked to teach courses in person and/or in distance format depending on department needs.

Teaching responsibilities include:

  • Teaching assigned courses in accordance with faculty expectations as outlined in the workload policy and George Mason faculty handbook;
  • Typical instructional workload is 4 courses per semester, with the option to teach over the summer;
  • Teaching modalities will include in-person, online, and hybrid courses;
  • Teaching current tools and approaches to Artificial Intelligence (AI) and related coding and architecture to humanities students for the purposes of studying and understanding ethical and equitable uses of AI; and
  • Teaching practices in professional and technical communication current to contemporary discussions in scholarship and practice.

Department Service responsibilities include:

  • Participates in professional associations relevant to technical communication, the teaching of writing, information technology, or related fields; and
  • Advises students on academic and professional issues while providing referrals to resources when appropriate.


Required Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in technical communication or related field;
    Record of effective teaching as the instructor of record in technical communication courses taught in a variety of modalities (online, hybrid, and/or in person); and
  • Ability to work with a diverse student population.


Preferred Qualifications:

  • PhD in technical communication or related field;
  • Prior teaching and/or research experience with Artificial Intelligence (AI), including AI coding and ethics, in a communications or humanities context;
  • Prior experience teaching in a college or university setting;
  • Prior professional experience as a technical communicator or related job (editing, UX, design, etc.);
  • Prior experience advising students on academics, careers, and technical writing in various workplaces; and
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
