The Alaka`ina Foundation Family of Companies (FOCs) has a potential need for a Behavioral Biology Research Scientist to support our government customer located in Silver Spring, MD.

DESCRIPTION OF RESPONSIBILITIES:

+ Assumes lead role in various research and development activities.

+ Proposes, plans, organizes, and executes experiments and research.

+ Utilizes established mathematical and scientific techniques to compile and analyze data.

+ Summarizes findings in reports and communicates results. Interacts with other scientists within and outside of the organization.

+ Relies on experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals perform a variety of tasks.

+ May lead and direct the work of others. A wide degree of creativity and latitude is expected.

+ Conduct applied research on the impact of insufficient sleep, circadian misalignment, and/or fatigue on Warfighter performance, health, and wellbeing.

+ Provide scientific expertise in psychophysiology, actigraphy, cognitive performance testing, personality testing, psychological stress, Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome (PTSD), traumatic stress effects, Mild Traumatic Brain Injury (mTBI), pain, neurophysiology, statistics, and functional brain imaging.

+ Perform human research studies (field and laboratory) to include writing protocols, executing protocols, analyzing data, and writing manuscripts.

+ Perform tasks to support and or conduct protocols utilizing the Sleep Laboratory to investigate stress, PTSD, TBI, Mental Health Research, neurotrauma, as well as the effects of blast, resilience, sleep deprivation, and pharmacological agents.

+ Develop and maintain Standard Operating Procedures for data collection, and ensure that all study data are collected, recorded, documented, and archived in compliance with Good Clinical Practices and pertinent government rules, regulations, and policies.

+ Administer psychological and performance measures to subjects as specified in protocols.

+ Maintain an appropriate, professional demeanor in all interactions with human research participants and research collaborators.

+ Oversee recruitment and screening of volunteers for human research protocols.

+ Administer neurocognitive tasks, symptom questionnaires, informed consent, and other related paperwork.

+ Collect physiological data (e.g., metabolic rate) and aid in their compilation/entry for later analyses.

+ Provide technical support in actigraph utilization for all research studies (field and laboratory) to include maintenance, testing, trouble-shooting, and repair of actigraphs.

+ Train, lead, and/or coordinate technical staff members in all areas of polysomnography, performance testing, and actigraphy, and additional functions to include (but not limited to) PC-based initialization of devices with appropriate parameters and power sources; data acquisition; and data processing.

+ Assist in Subject recruitment physicals, including administration of standardized psychological evaluations.

+ Will be responsible for a number of sleep studies to include, pre-site visit preparations, as well as site visit responsibilities and travel/overnight stays for up to studies (5) studies.

+ Conduct site visits as dictated by the monitoring plan, focusing on: subject entry criteria, informed consent process, and verification of data accuracy and protocol/study compliance.

+ Communicate with site Investigator/coordinator any issues, including adverse effects, that require follow-up, action(s) to be taken, and expected timelines for completion for all action items.

+ Perform and oversee monitoring of data collection equipment as data are recorded on-line.

+ Ensure quality control for a variety of laboratory and field research procedures and review for the accuracy of test results.

+ Lead field data collection, administering tasks, questionnaires, informed consent, and other related paperwork.

+ Collect physiological data and aid in their compilation/entry for later analyses.

+ Prepare and obtain approvals for human scientific protocols to investigate the relationships between sleep/circadian/fatigue parameters and military-relevant outcomes.

+ Train research assistants responsible for executing tasks required by the study.

+ May be required to travel by airplane, car, or other modes of transportation (either inside or outside of the continental US) in order to collect and/or process data during military operations.

+ Other duties as assigned by Supervisor.

REQUIRED DEGREE/EDUCATION/CERTIFICATION:

Must have PhD Degree in relevant scientific field of study including but not limited to Behavioral Biology, Electrophysiology, Physiology, or Neuroscience.

REQUIRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:

+ Must have three to five (3 5) years of experience in one or more fields of electrophysiology, physiology, or neuroscience.

+ Should have at least five to ten (5 -10) years of post-doctoral experience.

+ Must have familiarity with a variety of the field's concepts, practices, and procedures.

+ Area of specialty may be requested, including electrophysiology, physiology, or neuroscience.

REQUIRED CITIZENSHIP AND CLEARANCE:

+ Must be U.S. Citizen.

+ Must hold a minimum DoD Clearance level of Public Trust, with ability to obtain Secret.
