The Town of Front Royal is looking for a Full-Time Water Treatment Operator to work in a "Swing Shift" capacity. This operator must be currently licensed as a Class IV Water Treatment Operator or higher, with the ability to progress and obtain a Class 1 License as required. This position is responsible for covering shifts when other operators and the Assistant Manager of the Water Treatment Plant are on leave (including sick and/or vacation).

Starting pay rate is $18.90/hr. Rate is dependent upon class level and applicable qualifications and experience.
Class IV Minimum - $18.90
Class III Minimum - $20.33
Class II Minimum - $21.85
Class I Minimum - $25.25

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

The Water Treatment Plant operates 24/7, thus this position is subject to call-back hours on nights, weekends and holidays to ensure continuous operation of facility and equipment.

Schedule:
  • The typical shift for the position is 8-hour day shifts, Monday through Friday. However, when filling in for operators, you would work the operators scheduled 12-shift(s), both day and night shifts.

A. Operate a Water Treatment plant, Raw and Potable Pumping Stations; take samples; read gauges and charts; maintain plant equipment to ensure federal and state water quality standards compliance.
B. Maintain records of water samples.
C. Prepare reports.
D. Oversee proper functioning of water pumps, motors, chlorinators, filters, and chemical feeders adjusting as necessary to maintain proper flow of water.
E. Maintain proper levels in clear wells, storage tanks, and reservoirs.
F. Compile and maintain reports on water treated for monthly and daily averages.
G. Add or adjust addition of chemicals to water as necessary.
H. Take notes of readings of meters and indicators.
I. Collect water samples from designated points.
J. Perform basic chemical tests.
K. Check pump houses for proper operation.
L. Oversee and train lower class operators in daily operation of WTP.
M. Make chlorine feed and treatment adjustments.
N. Replenish treatment equipment with chemicals.
O. Maintain records of chemical usage.
P. Perform routine equipment and plant monitoring maintenance.
Q. Perform preventive maintenance on equipment and pumps.
R. Perform daily chemical and physical analyses on raw, applied and finished water.
S. Perform building and grounds maintenance duties.
T. Perform related tasks as required.
U. Cover shifts when other operators are on vacation or sick
V. Work nights, weekends, holidays and rotating shifts.
W. Assist in collection of all regulatory distribution samples
X. Assist maintenance mechanic in repairs and installation of new equipment
Y. Assist in maintaining grounds at the water plant, remote tank sites, pumping stations and raw water reservoirs.

Requirements
  • Education: High School Diploma/GED
  • Experience: Must be currently licensed as a Class IV Water Treatment Plant Operator or higher
  • Valid Virginia driver's license
  • CPR, First Aid

Knowledge
  • Thorough knowledge of the principles, practices and equipment of water plant operations.
  • Chemicals and their functions that used in the plant.
  • Hazards of the job and safety precautions used by the department.
  • Thorough knowledge of routine laboratory procedures.

Skills
  • Use and care of hand tools that are used by the department
  • Communicate in a clear and concise manner both orally and in writing.
  • Prioritize and complete tasks in a timely manner.
  • Be organized and capable of multi-tasking.

Abilities
  • Check the operation of equipment and detect defects in their operation.
  • Follow directions.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates and public.


Work Environment
  • The worker is subject to outside environmental conditions, extreme cold, extreme heat, noise, vibration, and atmospheric conditions.
Physical Demands
  • This is heavy work requiring the exertion of 100 pounds of force occasionally, up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects;
  • Work requires climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, and repetitive motions.
