JOB SUMMARY

Performs skilled work at the entry apprentice level in the installation, maintenance and repair of plumbing, heating, boiler, and fire suppression systems and may be asked to perform emergency or special jobs independently as necessary.

Additional Work Days/Hours

Based on the assignment, the following additional work days and/or hours may be required as needed:

* Emergencies

* Inclement weather conditions

* Overtime as needed

* Peak season

* Summer hours

ESSENTIAL DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES

* Works closely with Journey level mechanic and occasionally independently performing assigned tasks including but not limited to service, adjustment, replacement, repair and maintenance of Sanitary, Potable Water, Fire Suppression and Heating systems, components and parts.

* Cuts, bends and threads pipes.

* Repairs or replaces pipe insulation with preformed plastic covers, canvas strips, sealant, or tape to secure insulation to structures, according to type of insulation used and structure covered as required.

* Assists in the repairs of hot and cold water, oil, steam or gas pipes, and makes all necessary connections.

* Works as part of a larger team to accomplish large or complicated tasks as needed.

* Responds to emergency situations as needed.

* Performs other related duties as assigned within the same classification or lower.

Education

* High School Diploma or Equivalency Certificate required; and

* Technical or Vocational School Beyond High School Trade School preferred.

Experience

* Three (3) years progressive trade experience required.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Other Characteristics

* Must be familiar with procedures and regulations pertaining to hazardous materials.

* Knowledge of methods, procedures, tools and equipment necessary to carry out duties.

* Ability to make independent judgments and decisions within established parameters.

* Ability to learn the content of and skill in reading, interpreting and applying work orders, diagrams, sketches, blueprints, drawings and specifications, and manufacturers manuals.

* Demonstrated ability to effectively work and communicate with diverse populations.

* Must own, supply, and have the knowledge to safely use all standard hand tools required to perform work associated with tasks as outlined in this job description.

* Ability to employ business technology tools (e.g. E-mail, AACPS Intranet, electronic benefits enrollment tool, Microsoft Office Suite, etc.).

Licenses and Certifications

Employee must retain active licenses, certifications, and enrollment as a condition of employment.

* Upon hire, Plumbing Apprentice Plumber License issued by Maryland Board of Plumbing required; or

* Upon hire, Plumbing Journey Plumber/Gas Fitter License issued by Maryland Board of Plumbing preferred; and

* Upon hire, Driver's License (DL) Class C Non-Commercial issued by Maryland or State of Legal Residence (MVA/DMV) required.

* Proof of a good driving record required.

* Daily access to reliable transportation.

* Driving is required to conduct bona fide Board business that is within the scope of employment in this position.

CAREER LADDER REQUIREMENTS

Qualification Requirements for Employment in Higher Grade as a New Hire or Transfer requires:

* Two (2) additional years continuous successful experience required.

* Journeyman Plumber license issued by the Maryland Board of Plumbing required.

Eligibility for Consideration for Advancement from Lower Grade to Higher Grade requires:

* Two (2) years continuous successful experience in the position at the Lower Grade level.

* Mastery of all responsibilities and duties of the position.

* Achievement of Professional Certification, License or evidence of course completion in pursuit of such certification or license, if applicable.

* Evidence of completion of additional training that may be recommended by supervisor and/or participation in approved professional development programs or courses, approved in advance by the supervisor. Successful completion of a minimum of one professional development within the last two years is required. Successful completion of job specific professional developments identified on the job description, performance evaluations and/or the supervisor's documented recommendation are required.

* Achievement of identified goals as they relate to the needs of the district and as established by the supervior.

* Consistent maintenance of an effective and orderly work environment.

* Consistent compliance with general office procedures such as standards contained in the AACPS Employee Handbook; demonstration of discretion and excellent customer service; regular and punctual attendance; and building dress code, including wearing AACPS ID badge.

* Above Satisfactory overall job performance for the two most recent consecutive years of Performance Ratings.

* Letter of Recommendation written by the supervisor.

Additional Requirements for Advancement from Lower Grade to Higher Grade requires:
