Position Description

Anne Arundel County Government is looking to hire a full-time, permanent, Safety Sensitive, Survey Field Technician I position in the Bureau of Engineering in the Department of Public Works.

Survey Field Technician I is responsible for land surveying, global positioning system (GPS) surveying, and geographic information system (GIS) mapping support in the Survey Section of the Bureau of Engineering.

NATURE AND VARIETY OF WORK

Work involves responsibility for collecting field data associated with land surveying, global positioning system (GPS) surveying, and geographic information system (GIS) mapping support work.

Work includes operating surveying instruments and GPS equipment on a survey crew and working independently in the field. Work is assigned by a Survey Crew Chief or other supervisor who provides instructions and assistance on unusual or complex problems. Work is reviewed for technical accuracy during progress and upon completion.

Examples of Duties and Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Carries surveying instruments, GPS equipment, tools, and supplies to and from the vehicle and job site.

Operates a variety of surveying instruments, electronic data collectors, and GPS instruments.

Inspects and cleans surveying instruments, GPS equipment, and other tools to keep them in good condition and working order.

Clears surveys sight lines with a ditch bank blade or other cutting tool(s).

Locates and excavates property markers, monuments, and survey control points.

Sets up work zone traffic signs and other work zone controls.

Operates a survey vehicle.

Assists and performs duties as assigned during storm events or emergencies.

Records survey data in field book and data collector checks survey notes for accuracy.

Prepares and maintains necessary records and reports.

Performs related work as required.

POSITIONS IN THIS CLASS OF WORK ARE REQUIRED TO PERFORM JOB FUNCTIONS OUTDOORS THE YEAR ROUND IN ADVERSE WEATHER CONDITIONS OPERATE VARIOUS TYPES OF SURVEYING AND GPS INSTRUMENTS, TRAVEL ON FOOT OVER LAND FOR LONG DISTANCES, OVER ALL TYPES OF TERRAIN, (STEEP SLOPES, MARSHY AREA, THICK BRUSH, ALONG BUSY ROADWAYS), STAND IN PLACE FOR EXTENDED PERIODS, CUT TREE AND BRUSH, TRANSPORT SURVEY EQUIPMENT AND SUPPLIES WEIGHING UP TO 80 POUNDS, DRIVE IRON BARS, WOODEN HUBS, WOODEN STAKES, AND OPEN MANHOLES.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

Knowledge of the standard terminology, techniques, and practices of land surveying and GPS surveying.

Knowledge of the State of Maryland Minimum Standards of Practice for Surveying.

Knowledge of mathematics through algebra and trigonometry.

Knowledge of basic computer operations.

Knowledge of accepted safety practices and procedures.

Knowledge of the principles of operation and maintenance of a variety of land surveying instruments and GPS equipment.

Ability to carry equipment and supplies, weighing up to 80 pounds, and open manholes.

Ability to perform moderately complex mathematical computations.

Ability to read and interpret engineering plans and specifications, recorded property plats, survey plats, maps, and deed descriptions.

Ability to learn the operation of surveying instruments and GPS equipment as technology changes and improves.

Ability to engage in fieldwork for extended periods, occasionally under adverse weather conditions.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with superiors and other employees.

Ability to operate surveying instruments, GPS equipment, and other tools.

Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.

Ability to work independently.

Ability to travel on foot for long distances and over all types of terrain.

Ability to perform duties in all types of weather conditions.

Ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing.

Minimum Qualifications

Education: Graduation from high school or vocational school.

Experience: One (1) or more years experience in boundary, right-of-way, construction, and topographic surveying and field operations; and a valid non-commercial Class C motor vehicle operator's license.

NOTE: The one (1) or more years experience in boundary surveying, right-of-way surveying, construction surveying, easement surveying, topographic surveying, and field operations may be substituted with one (1) or more years experience in boundary surveying OR right-of-way surveying, OR construction surveying, OR easement surveying, OR topographic surveying.

Note: This position is Safety Sensitive and employees in this position are subject to Controlled Dangerous Substance (CDS) and Alcohol testing.
