The Senior Principal Coach is responsible for planning and executing induction program activities for first-, second-, and third-year principals and assistant principals, including staff members in these roles who are new to the role altogether and staff members in these roles with prior experience in other districts during their first years in City Schools. Informed directly by the district's Leadership Frameworks for Principals, Assistant Principals, and Residents, these activities include but are not limited to: annual, institute-like programming for all individuals who are new to the roles; mentoring programs including peer mentoring supported by identified Transformational Principals, collaboration with Instructional Leadership Executive Directors, vendors with expertise in school leadership, and/or other individuals or groups; and additional new principal- and assistant principal-focused professional learning opportunities during the year.

As one measure of the district's performance in implementing Blueprint Leadership activities, the Human Capital Office has set a goal to consistently increase the number of schools led by a principal who has consistently served in the role in the school for more than three years while demonstrating effective and/or highly effective performance. Ultimately, the Senior Principal Coach is responsible for leading the induction activities that contribute to progress on this and other identified metrics of a new principal and assistant principal performance, impact, and retention. The Senior Principal Coach must work in close collaboration with other members of this unit to ensure alignment. The Senior Principal Coach must also align with the teacher induction activities implemented by the Educational Associate - Teacher Induction. The Senior Principal Coach will bring many years of successful performance at the principal level or incomparable leadership positions in school districts. The Senior Principal Coach must maintain high levels of credibility and ability to collaborate with senior district leaders, including the leaders who supervise and coach City Schools principals.

The Senior Principal Coach implements activities for the Transformational Principal and Distinguished Principal pathways in accordance with decisions made by the PSASA Joint Oversight Committee, which is made up of chief officers and leaders of the administrators' union. As directed by the JOC and/or the Director - Educator Pipelines and Induction in accordance with approved plans, Transformational and Distinguished Principals provide additional capacity to this department for implementing educator induction program components. Similarly, the mentoring component of the district's teacher induction program is supported by hundreds of part-time peer mentors, who each support early career teachers each year.

Essential Functions
  • Coordinates, designs, and facilitates comprehensive, cohesive Assistant Principal and Principal Institute activities that develop new assistant principal and principals' sense of community, alignment with City Schools aspirational culture, and competencies and content knowledge.
  • Collaborates with key staff in all District Office divisions to design differentiated sessions for New Assistant Principal and Principal Institutes to help prepare teachers for their first day, week, month, and year.
  • Manages the district's comprehensive Assistant Principal and Principal Mentoring Programs, including selecting, developing, and monitoring part-time and seasonal staff members; setting standards for mentors, mentees, and Principals; and reporting on programs' progress to a variety of stakeholders.
  • Creates, executes, and sustains innovative formal and informal learning systems that meet unique needs for new Principal and Assistant Principal sub-populations, including but not limited to opportunities such as fellowships, workshops, lunch and learns, on-demand learning, retreats, certificate programs, book clubs, administrative professional conferences, leadership academies, mentoring programs, etc.
  • Plans and delivers professional development activities for staff members during typical school hours, after school, in the evening, on Saturdays, and during the summer.
  • Facilitates interactive, fast-paced, engaging training and coaching engagements, commanding the attention of participants.
  • Quickly builds trust, credibility, and goodwill with a wide range of diverse employees.
  • Observes employees in action, diagnose needs, and designs training interventions to meet those needs.
  • Coaches with a balance of empathy with a healthy impatience to see progress.
  • Considers supervisor contexts and analyzes situations to see beyond the surface of challenges; effectively customizes general practices to fit clients' needs.
  • Coordinates with the Director - Educator Pipelines and Induction and staff in the System Learning and Development department to continuously measure program effectiveness.
  • Analyzes data - including student performance, principal professional practice, and participant perception data - to evaluate the successes and challenges of learning and development programs.
  • Prepares statistical and narrative reports surfacing key policy questions based on underlying data and/or graphs, as appropriate; presents research results and policy recommendations.
  • Designs learning modules that demonstrate mastery with storyboarding consistent with adult learning theory and instructional design principles.
  • Manages internal and external facilitator relationships and vendor relationships, including onboarding/orienting third-party partners to City Schools' learning and development approaches.
  • Ensures all aspects of development incorporate and strengthen the district's commitment to racial equity and inclusion.
  • Coaches' individuals and teams to skills, as assigned.
  • Creates and monitors an annual calendar of induction program activities, ensuring that participants and their supervisors have a clear understanding of program components and objectives.
  • Collaborates with the Human Capital Office's Employee Effectiveness department to build and maintain alignment between the Leadership Frameworks for Principals, Assistant Principals, and Residents and induction activities.
  • Monitors assistant principal and principal and principal supervisors' satisfaction with the Human Capital Office and assistant principal and principal induction programs/activities and develops and executes improvement plans to increase satisfaction.
  • Collaborates with the Human Capital Office's Recruitment and Selection department to build and maintain alignment between competency-based recruitment and assistant principal and principal induction program activities.
  • Collaborates with the Employee Engagement department to ensure that individuals experience a positive and consistent transition into their new role with thoughtfully coordinated activities that address their needs related to employee engagement and their needs related to professional practice in the role.
  • Keeps abreast of changes in City Schools' policies, procedures, negotiated agreements, school/student achievement and business function data, performance data and core human capital areas as they relate to delivering quality human capital services to all customers and increasing workforce effectiveness.
  • Prepares and distributes communications concerning policies and procedures to ensure staff is well informed and knowledgeable.
  • Recommends new approaches, policies, and procedures to effect continual improvements in efficiency of department and services performed.
  • Performs and promotes all activities in compliance with equal employment and nondiscrimination policies; follows federal laws, state laws, school board policies and the professional standards.

Desired Qualifications
  • Required: Master's degree from an accredited college or institution.
  • Required: At least an MSDE Advanced Professional Certificate with an Administrative II endorsement.
  • Required: At least six years of experience as a classroom teacher and/or school or district administrator.
  • Required: At least two years of experience managing people as a direct supervisor, which may be counted toward the six-year requirement above.
Additional skills and experiences we seek:
  • Knowledge of principles and processes for learning and development, especially for adult learners within schools, school districts, and/or networks ofschools.
  • Evidence of attention to racial equity in prior work experience.
  • Experience providing and/or coordinating professional learning to Principals and/or Teachers in a K-12 school district or network of schools.
  • At least three years of service as a school administrator is highly preferred.
  • Advanced skills in the use of Windows environments and applications including Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
  • Experience in using Human Resource Information Systems (HRIS) such as Taleo, Oracle, or PeopleSoft.
  • Knowledge of principles and processes for providing customer and personal service to include customer needs assessment, meeting quality standards for services, and evaluation of customer satisfaction.
  • Familiarity with local, state, and federal laws, policies, regulations, and guidelines related to employment, human capital/human resources, and talent management.
  • Ability to objectively analyze data and make recommendations on a variety of administrative issues.
  • Ability to remain flexible in a creative and challenging work environment.
  • Excellent oral, written, and presentation skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills with demonstrated ability to identify, prioritize, organize tasks to accomplish assigned and self-generated tasks efficiently and effectively.
