At Blue Origin, we envision millions of people living and working in space for the benefit of Earth. We're working to develop reusable, safe, and low-cost space vehicles and systems within a culture of safety, collaboration, and inclusion. Join our diverse team of problem solvers as we add new chapters to the history of spaceflight!

This position is part of the Space Systems Development (SSD) business unit. SSD develops next-generation concepts and systems to advance our future of living and working in space sustainably.

At Blue Origin, we are pioneering the future of space exploration with a grand vision of millions of people living and working in space. We are seeking a seasoned, highly skilled, and motivated Electrical Engineer to join our dynamic electrical power subsystem (EPS) team on our commercial space station project. You will work as an individual contributor under the direction of the space station EPS Lead. Our ideal candidate is someone who not only excels in the design and development of large spacecraft electrical power systems but also demonstrates a commitment to our bold mission.

Responsibilities:

  • Conduct detailed trade studies resulting in selection of optimal EPS power topologies and components.
  • Conduct detailed subsystem analyses such as energy balance, voltage drop, system stability, and power integrity.
  • Contribute to the decomposition and maintaining of space station EPS requirements.
  • Generate EPS block diagrams and context diagrams.
  • Generate and maintain space station powered equipment list and dynamic electrical load profiles for all mission phases.
  • Draft interface control drawings (ICDs) that define the EPS interface to other space station subsystems, elements, and visiting vehicles.
  • Contribute to the development of the space station electrical Power Quality Specification (PQS).
  • Take an active role in engaging EPS component suppliers, ensuring issues are resolved in a timely manner and that hardware is delivered on time and meets requirements.
  • Prepare and present technical data packages for subsystem and program gated reviews.
  • Contribute to recurring EPS component cost and schedule reports.
  • Provide guidance and mentorship to junior engineers.
  • Participate in EPS design reviews.
  • Help troubleshoot complex EPS-related issues.
  • Generate EPS technical content for proposals.
  • Generate EPS component environmental test plans and procedures.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering or related technical field
  • 8+ years of industry experience in electrical engineering
  • Three years' industry experience in spacecraft power systems
  • Spacecraft flight hardware development experience with one or more of the following: battery, solar array, power distribution, power conversion
  • Demonstrated ability in EPS requirements decomposition and verification.
  • Familiarity with EPS analyses including energy balance, voltage drop, system stability, failure mode effects and criticality analysis (FMECA), fault tree analysis (FTA), and power integrity (PI) analysis.
  • Experience in managing EPS supplier relationships.
  • Excellent teamwork skills, with the ability to work collaboratively and embrace diverse perspectives.
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to effectively articulate highly technical concepts to a diverse audience.
  • Strong understanding of spacecraft grounding and bonding design
  • Familiarity with spacecraft EPS component environmental testing (TVAC, shock/vibration, EMI)

Preferred:

  • Experience architecting electrical power systems for human-rated spacecraft.
  • Proven experience architecting >10 kW, >100 V spacecraft electrical power systems
  • Spacecraft flight hardware development experience in multiple of the following: battery, solar array, power distribution, power conversion, wire harness
  • Full life cycle (proposal to orbit) spacecraft flight hardware design experience.
  • Proven experience in system-level and circuit-level modeling and simulation using MATLAB/Simulink
  • Depth of knowledge in electrical power quality requirements and inter-vehicle power compatibility
  • Familiarity with spacecraft electrical module analyses, including Worst Case Circuit Analysis (WCCA), part stress analysis (PSA), signal integrity (SI), power integrity (PI), and Failure Mode Effects and Criticality Analysis (FMECA)
