Interdisciplinary Sculpture Student Worker

Job description

General purpose: The Sculpture Studio Student Technician assists with the day to day operations of the Interdisciplinary Sculpture Department studios, including the wood shop, mold shop, and metal shop, supporting student work in the studios, and fielding questions pertaining to the studio facilities

Work Schedule:

Part time 5-10 hours per week, regular business hours, evenings and weekends. 2 semester appointment renewable.

Summary of Essential Functions:

* Assist students with machine setup/unlocking equipment

* Support students with CNC plasma cutting

* Change compressed gas cylinders when necessary

* Change consumable items on machines such as blades and abrasives

* Report any damaged or out of stock items to Studio Manager

* Ensure proper use of Personal Protective Equipment

Essential duties and responsibilities:

* Assist with maintaining and enforcing Environmental Health and Safety compliance by modeling safe studio practices and ensuring proper shop etiquette

* Provide support to student community and monitor equipment use

* Enforce studio policies and demonstrate best practices when assisting students with equipment, materials, and techniques

* Provide assistance to other student technicians in areas where necessary.

* Lock all equipment at the end of a shift

* Shut off all fans/ventilation at the end of a shift

* Ensure ventilation is being used correctly and where/when necessary

* Clean studios at the end of the night shift

* Communicate with Studio Manager to help maintain tools, software, and check stock of PPE

* Perform other relevant duties as assigned

Knowledge, skills, and Abilities:

* Ability to collaborate with the studio community of students, faculty, and staff

* Proficient communication skills - don't be shy. Share what you know when people ask questions

* Practical knowledge of welding, fabrication, basic wood working, and mold making

* Ability to draw in Rhino, and to be able to help students trouble shoot their files and fix drawings

* Ability to assist with mold making, rubber mixing, plaster mixing, clay work and proper PPE related to mold making

* Good mechanical sensibility

* Good organizational skills

* Quality craftsmanship and a desire to incorporate cross disciplinary methods in your work

* Strong organizational skills

* Sensitive to student needs

* Knowledge of PPE appropriate to technique or machinery

Minimum Qualifications:

* Current MICA undergraduate student

* Previous job experience

* Sculpture major/INTRO to SCULPTURE and METAL FABRICATION CLASSES

* Sculpture studio tool knowledge

Preferred Qualifications:

* 1+ year metal working experience

* 1+ year wood working experience

* 1+ year mold making experience

* Working as a technician elsewhere on campus

* Skills in Rhino 3D/Sheetcam CNC Plasma cutting software

* Knowledge of various welding techniques

* Solid portfolio demonstrating skills and techniques relevant to this position

* Work environment: While performing the duties of the job, the employee is exposed to weather conditions prevalent at the time. The noise level in the work environment is usually minimal, but ear protection is required at times.

* Required training: Handbook orientation, Anti-Harassment, Hazard Communication, Emergency Plans & Fire Prevention, Personal Protection Equipment.
