Job description

REPORTS TO:

Principal and Director of Student Services

EMPLOYMENT STATUS:

Regular, full time

FLSA STATUS:

Exempt

POSITION SUMMARY:

Teach students with disabilities the skills and knowledge that lead to a productive life.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

* Assess student achievement continuously, in order to design appropriate instruction. Administer standardized and criterion referenced tests as directed by the Special Education Coordinator.

* Develop and implement individual education plans according to State and local policies and procedures.

* Prepare clear and timely lesson plans that implement the IEPs.

* Utilize instructional methods, materials and media that implement the IEP's and are appropriate for students' abilities and skills.

* Establish a safe and comfortable environment for students, including reasonable guidelines and appropriate consequences for behavior.

* Provide appropriate intervention for students who exhibit deviant behavior and students who need help with personal care, such as toileting, diapering and feeding.

* Coordinate instruction, to the extent possible, with the district's approved courses of study.

* Communicate regularly with classroom teachers, support personnel and others, as appropriate, using the approved procedures and forms.

* Prepare adequately for substitute teachers.

* Report to parents, in writing and at conferences, at the intervals established by the district, the Principal and/or the Special Education Coordinator.

* Communicate with parents on an ongoing basis, in a positive manner.

* Make effective use of resources and materials and care for them in a responsible manner.

* Participate actively as a building staff member and also as a member of the Special Education Department.

* Keep accurate and detailed records, according to Special Education and building rules.

* Observe the adopted daily building schedule, including starting and ending times for teachers and students, and perform all assigned duties.

* Attend all building and Special Education staff meetings, unless excused.

* Serve on committees and participate in school activities in a professionally responsible manner.

* Communicate with agencies, authorities and private practitioners, according to confidentiality guidelines and other district procedures.

* Engage in continuous professional growth, including attending training sessions as assigned. Complete a professional development plan according to procedures adopted by the school district.

* Use sound judgment, tact and diplomacy when interacting with students, parents and the community, and maintain the confidentiality of information that is not public domain.

* Serve as a role model in the practice of ethical principles, responsible behavior and democratic values.

* Observe all Special Education laws and local procedures.

OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

* Assist with the selection of teaching materials and equipment.

* Work with student teachers if needed.

* Supervise an aide, if appropriate.

* Maintain an appropriate personal appearance.

* Observe all safety and health regulations of the school district.

* Perform other duties as assigned by the Principal, and/or the Special Education Coordinator.

QUALIFICATIONS:

* Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university.

* Appropriate Ohio teaching certificate/license.

* Alternative to the above qualifications as the Superintendent and/or Board of Education may find appropriate.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

* Basic knowledge of educationally relevant disabilities.

* Knowledge of a variety of instructional designs, methods and activities appropriate for the age and developmental level of the population being served.

* Willingness to acquire skill in instructional methods recommended by the Special Education Coordinator for a child or group of children.

* Knowledge of positive behavior management methods.

* Ability to meet the time requirements of the IEP schedule.

* Ability to work effectively with others in many different situations, including teams.

* Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing.

* Effective, active listening skills.

* Well developed organizational and problem solving skills.

* Knowledge of basic computer technology, or willingness to acquire and appropriately apply such knowledge.

EQUIPMENT OPERATED:

* Various office machines and instructional equipment, such as calculators, copiers, laminating machines, VCR's, DVD players, slide projectors.

* Computer/printer.

* Some specialized equipment used by students with disabilities; for example amplification devices, medical devices and specialized computers.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

* Potential exposure to blood or other bodily fluids and tissue.

* Occasional operation of a vehicle in inclement weather; that is, being prepared to come to school on all scheduled work days, except calamity days.

* Frequent interaction with unruly children.

* Potential interaction with angry or distraught adults.Must be available for education related purposes outside the school day when requested to do so under reasonable terms; for example, I.E.P. meetings.

* Regular requirement to sit, stand, walk, talk, hear, see, read, reach with hands and arms, stoop, crouch, and kneel.

* Occasional requirement to lift, carry, push and pull various items; for example, books and supplies, up to 25 lbs.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

* Length of Employment: One Year Limited Contract
