Job Title: Mental Health Counselor - Newark campus Department: Newark | General The Mental Health Counselor provides short-term counseling for enrolled Ohio State Newark and Central Ohio Technical College students being able to offer in-person treatment or telehealth services by request. This person will be responsible for completing clinical intakes, engaging students in counseling sessions, triage appointments, the ability to assess a student for safety during a crisis, provide diagnostic information to the student or other offices as necessary, engage students struggling with mental health disorders or drug and alcohol use disorders through evidence based treatment modalities, and create referrals as needed on and off campus for other services such as long-term counseling, medication management, or further psychological testing. The position requires the ability to complete and maintain timely documentation of clinical services through an electronic database, as well as completion of documentation that might be needed to support accommodations offered by Disability Services as necessary. This position will require the ability to engage in various outreach events including presentations to student groups and classrooms on mental health topics or drug and alcohol issues. Primary office is located on the Newark campus, with occasional travel to other regional campuses for COTC. Work from home hours can be considered and negotiated but will vary semester to semester depending on student needs. Masters degree with a licensure in counseling or social work, holding an LPC, LPCC, LPCC-S or LSW, LISW, or LISW-S. The candidate needs to be in good standing with the State of Ohio Counselor, Social Worker and Marriage and Family Therapist Board holding an active counselor or social worker license. Must maintain licensure through regular CEUs every two years or licensure cycle. A minimum of 5 years experience working as a mental health counselor and diagnosing mental health and drug and alcohol use disorders. Must be able to accurately assess the mental health needs of students, make diagnoses when applicable, provide treatment, and have a general knowledge of additional resources on and off campus to support students with continuity of care including their ability to succeed academically. Be able to complete intakes, use screening tools, utilize observation, and connect students to other psychological testing as needed. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Must possess sensitivity and understanding of diversity. The position requires an individual to work independently while also being able to work within a team format. Requires successful completion of a background check. Preferred Qualifications: Previous experience working in community mental health, higher education, and/or with diverse populations is an asset.
