The Prince George's County Police Department is seeking qualified applicants to fill multiple permanent part-time School Crossing Guard positions, grade X-13, within the Special Operations Division.
About this Position:
This is specialized work that involves the safe crossing of school children and pedestrians and control of traffic at school or other crossings. Work is to prevent accidents and protect the safety of school children and other pedestrians. The incumbent of this class does not have the authority to arrest but does have the power to perform traffic control operations to ensure the safe flow of vehicles and the movement of pedestrians. Employees must wear a uniform while on assignment and work requires employees to stand, walk, and use arm/hand signals, whistles, and voice.
Applicants MUST be able to work between the hours of 7:00 a.m. - 9:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. - 5:00 p.m.
Accountability Statement:
The incumbent must meet and maintain the training standards set forth by the Prince George's County Police Department. The incumbent shall not disseminate confidential information, administrative or operational, unless expressly authorized. Confidential information may not be discussed with other County employees (including individuals in the Police Department), except for work-related reasons, under terms and conditions of the Maryland Public Information Act. The incumbent in this position is deemed "essential personnel" and is subject to report during standard or non-standard hours as operations necessitate.
Examples of Work
What You'll Do:
Direct or escort school children and other pedestrians to cross the street at the school crossing guard signal and stopping traffic, as necessary.
Guide or control vehicular or pedestrian traffic at the designated crossing to allow children to cross safely.
Monitor traffic flow to locate safe gaps through which school children and pedestrians can cross streets.
Control the children using the crossing to ensure they conform to traffic regulations.
Communicate traffic and crossing rules and other information to school children and other pedestrians.
Report any traffic hazards to the police and or School Crossing Guard Supervisor.
Report motorists who fail to comply with provisions of the law governing the movement of vehicular traffic.
Appear in court to testify in cases involving violations of law, as needed.
Report flagrant traffic violators, accidents, and hazardous conditions to the Supervisor and appropriate school representative(s).
Contact school officials regarding school children who will not cooperate and place themselves and others at risk.
Willingly and cooperatively perform tasks and duties which may not be specifically listed in the class specification or position description, but which are within the general occupational category and responsibility level typically associated with the employee's class of work.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

High school diploma or equivalent (GED). Must be at least 18 years old at time of appointment and must pass vision and hearing test and/or other required examinations. Must be able to report to assigned worksite within 1-hour of notification through reliable transportation. Candidates must be accessible before and during school hours by phone to respond to scheduling changes.

Must report to assignments on time and perform assigned duties for the full duration. The School Crossing Guard is a position within Public Safety; therefore, attendance is critical.

Must have reliable transportation to report to assigned locations within a 1-hour notification period.
Work shifts will be assigned; however, candidates must be able to work between 7:00 a.m. - 9:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. - 5:00 p.m.

General Plan Information:
The Prince George's County benefits plan year is from January 1 to December 31.
A spouse (to include a same sex spouse) can be added to the health benefit plans. A marriage certificate and social security number is required to add a spouse.
Children under the age of 26 are eligible for coverage under the health benefit plans. This includes stepchildren and children of the same-sex spouse. A birth certificate(s) and social security number(s) is required to add a child(ren). The premiums for health benefits are deducted on a pre-tax basis with the exception of Long-Term Disability, Extra Life Insurance and Voluntary Benefits (Short-Term Disability, Whole Life Insurance, Critical Illness, Accident Insurance, Cancer Indemnity, Hospital Indemnity Protection, Accident Indemnity Plan, Supplemental Dental and Group Legal Services).
New employees must enroll in the County's health benefit plans within thirty (30) days of the hire date.
The effective date of the health benefits coverage is the beginning of the month following a waiting period of forty-five (45) days from the date of hire.
After enrolling in the County's benefit plans, employees may only make changes to the plans either during the open enrollment period, which occurs annually (usually each October), and/or during the year, due to a family status change (i.e., marriage, births, divorce and adoption).
