Location: Washington, D.C. metro area (District of Columbia, Maryland, or Virginia) on a hybrid basis. The staff is in-office 3 days per week. Some weekend work and travel may be required
Salary: $120,000-$150,000, commensurate with experience.

ABOUT THIS ROLE

A community-based non-profit organization is seeking a Communications Director. In this role, you will lead the Communications department and be responsible for the ideation and the execution of all strategic communications plans both internally and externally. Day-to-day responsibilities include directing the following: media outreach, public relations, online and electronic communications, video, publications (print and digital), photography, our website and social media accounts. The ideal candidate will be someone who is able to utilize best practices, and new technologies to continue to improve our communications systems.

This is an opportunity for someone with deep communications experience to continue to build a growing team of communicators and lead communications for a values-driven organization that is a pillar of its local community and serves thousands nationally. This person will work hand-in-hand with the organization's top leadership and will lead, create, manage and scale key communications initiatives and priorities.

ACCOUNTABILITIES AND QUALIFICATIONS
  • Oversee all internal and external communication:
    • Build and maintain relationships with various stakeholders at all levels (i.e., members, elected officials, local government officials and the community) in order to drive the overall awareness of the organization
    • Collaborate with leadership to identify, understand, and engage key audiences and potential partners of the organization to develop and implement strategic communications plans
    • Create systems and processes to improve efficiency
  • Serve as the point of contact for all media:
    • Develop and manage public initiatives for major projects (i.e., building expansion, property acquisition, and issues related to community relations, parking, noise levels and events)
  • Editorial strategic planning:
    • Ensure consistent and relevant messaging and positioning across all external and internal communications
    • Oversee the strategic planning of social content across platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and others
    • Work across multiple channels to represent and convey the organization's message through print, web, and multimedia in the organization's style guide
    • Review all publications, including weekly e-blasts to members and other materials

Essential skills:
  • 5-7 years of communications experience-PR agency, non-profit, advocacy, government, think tank or a corporate public relations office
    • Previous experience working with nonprofit organizations preferred
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited school
  • Proven track record of media relations experience
  • Strong and proactive organizational, problem-solving and time-management abilities
  • Ability to create and execute a successful content communication strategy
  • Background knowledge with digital platforms, such as: Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn and Twitter
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal
    • Experience writing press releases, annual reports, articles, advertisements and speeches
    • Ability to confidently communicate clearly and effectively both verbally and in writing, with varying levels of staff, clients, the media and is comfortable thinking on their feet
    • Ability to condense complex information from various sources into concise and user-friendly formats
  • Ability to develop and maintain strong working relationships with internal and external stakeholders
  • Ability to lead a team and a personal commitment to effective management
  • Experience managing multiple priorities, developing processes and systems and utilizing a metrics-based approach to marketing communications
  • Familiarity with fundraising (i.e., creating communication materials for capital campaigns)
