Job Purpose

The Digital Publishing Specialist 'owns' many of the technical platforms, processes, and relationships that involve producing, presenting, and distributing current and envisioned digital scholarly products including eBooks and other digital scholarship outputs. Strong technical expertise with programs within the Adobe Creative Suite specifically InDesign, experience with web authoring and design utilizing HTML and CSS, as well as working knowledge of platform technologies and standards for display of eBooks, including reflowable EPUBs, and other digital scholarship formats are preferred. Preparing content for search, display and sale through online marketplaces and other digital distribution channels and familiarity with metadata standards that support accessibility and persistence are also preferred skills.

Key Responsibilities
  • Ownership of intricate technical processes including assessing and recommending platforms for implementation and cultivating essential partnerships necessary to develop and produce digital publications.
  • Preparation of book (for both print and electronic delivery) and multimodal publication formats through layout and design utilizing Adobe InDesign and platforms for display and delivery of multimodal works.
  • Contribute to ACA Bookstore platform operations and champion enhancements for user experience.
  • Collaborate with Acquisitions Editor and other stakeholders on the development of multimodal scholarship projects.
  • Educate community on digital publishing opportunities with ACA.
  • Foster cross-functional teamwork for seamless delivery of digital publications
  • Ensure highest quality of digital content and platforms, including maintenance and provision of accessibility for various file transmissions and production files.
  • Identify efficiencies and optimize technological expenditures.
  • Integrate diversity, equity, inclusion, and access principles into all aspects of work.
  • Stay updated on technological advancements in publishing.
  • Liaise between technical team and marketing/sales departments for alignment.
  • Assist with responding to inquiries in Publications inbox.


Requirements

  • Deep understanding of content display format production (HTML, CSS, XML) and validation and hands on experience utilizing the programs (e.g., Adobe InDesign) that utilize these display formats to layout and produce publications.
  • Familiarity with the publishing industry's accessibility standards, metadata management, and XML workflows.
  • 5+ years' experience working at an administrator level with web platform technologies (WordPress, etc.)
  • Excellent communication skills, including active listening, giving and receiving feedback, checking for shared understanding of technical concepts related to key decisions and shared outcomes.
  • Proven ability to excel under deadlines; strong time management skill set including leveraging productivity platforms and tools to help organize and streamline deliveries for self, team, and projects.
  • Proven ability to work collaboratively and succeed in problem solving.
  • Commitment to delivering superior customer service (internal and external "customers")
  • Creative thinker who embraces new ideas and is passionate about developing the potential of ACA Publications.
  • Experience working with open-source publishing platforms such as Open Monograph Press, Open Journal Systems, Manifold, or PubPub, preferred.

Location & Flexibility: Hybrid - must reside within the Washington DC Metro Area.

Target annualized salary is $85,000/year
