Job description
Under direction of the Director of Research, conducts research and ensures scientific accuracy of Safe Kids Worldwide initiatives, both domestic and global. In collaboration with Director of Research and the senior team, leads and authors research reports. Gathers available data and research and translates findings for scientific and public audiences, often on a short timeline. Works with Evaluation and Monitoring Associate and Safe Kids programs department to develop and evaluate program strategies that support identified childhood injury prevention initiatives. Consults and supports programs, communications, advocacy, development and networks staff on research needs and programmatic directions. Participates in planning a biennial conference on childhood injury prevention, works with Director of Research to organize research-centered summits, and assists with other meetings as needed.
Qualifications: Minimum Education MPH Public Health with extensive coursework in Epidemiology and/or Biostatistics (Required)
Minimum Work Experience 7 years professional technical writing experience preferably with demonstrated training or expertise in at least on injury risk area (Required)
Required Skills/Knowledge Strong verbal and written skills to effectively communicate with prospects and program partners. Basic - Intermediate HTML skill set as well as the ability to conduct work flow analysis within the program's context. Knowledge of STATA, SPSS, SAS or other statistical software. advanced level computer skills with Microsoft Word and Microsoft Office product suite. Strong problem-solving and analytical skills. Detail-oriented individual with the ability to work effectively, independently, and on multiple priorities in a fast-paced, collaborative environment. The ability to work effectively with other staff and to follow approved Safe Kids Worldwide procedures and policies. In-depth knowledge of at least one injury risk area: motor vehicle occupant protection, pedestrian safety, sports safety, water safety, home safety, poisoning prevention.
Functional Accountabilities Management of data collection, research, statistical evaluation and the formation of proposals and reports
Oversees the tracking of sources of childhood injury data
Serves as a SKW liaison to organizations supplying data and research assistance
Facilitates SKW utilization of national injury databases for grant writing, program planning, and media use
Under the direction of the Director of Research, serves as liaison with Children's National IRB on submitted projects
Under the direction of the Director of Research, selects and refines study measures, designs survey instruments to collect primary research data and works with the Evaluation and Monitoring Associate and programs department to build program evaluations
Conducts original data analyses using new and existing data sets
Co-authors SKW research reports
Reviews data on existing prevention programs and its usefulness to SKW
Provides data and statistical information to support Programs, Development, Advocacy, Network and Communications teams
Under the direction of the Director of Research, develops research proposals
Ensures technical accuracy of SKW research, programs and communications, coalitions and the public
Manages Safe Kids Worldwide's Injury Article Database, reviewing and procuring published articles in injury prevention field, sharing with staff as appropriate and maintaining electronic copy articles
Provides strategies and assistance to develop injury prevention programs and advocacy initiatives based on research and statistical data from injury prevention field
Provides input into evaluation of programmatic initiatives to facilitate and promote childhood injury prevention initiatives
Consults with staff managing programs on research needs and programmatic direction and monitoring, as requested
Offers new and updated injury prevention information to support Safe Kids Worldwide communications, including media outreach and organizational Website
Designs survey instruments, undertakes analyses and authors/coauthors Safe Kids research reports
Manages updating of Safe Kids Factsheets, Fast Facts and other data related resources
Provides support to Network Team on analysis and reporting on Network Assessments
Serves as Research Team liaison for Safe Kids Website and Resource Center
Provides accurate and timely responses to requests for injury prevention statistics and resources
Provides assistance to coalitions with statistical information and facts on childhood injuries and injury prevention
Serves as a resource for coalitions collecting and analyzing state and local injury data
Represents Safe Kids Worldwide as an alternate on various research and academic committees and advisory groups, as well as at meetings and conferences, to offer injury prevention expertise and promote Safe Kids Worldwide research programs and activities
Works collaboratively with staff, major sponsors, agency representatives, and outside partners to facilitate flow of information and foster strong working relationships
Works with Director of Research to strengthen SKW research capacity through partnership
Evaluates resource materials for suitability of dissemination and conducts conference presentations
Coordinates and gathers data and information for SKW resources and products
Coordinates and presents SKW information to coalition leaders, sponsors, and outside organizations
Provides leadership and assistance for program workshops at biennial SKW Childhood Injury Prevention Conference
Monitor and facilitate papers and presentations documenting SKW research findings
Monitors scholarly journals to increase knowledge base in current injury research methodology and developments across all risk areas
Authors/co-authors papers and presentations documenting SKW research findings for submission to peer-reviewed scholarly journals and academic conferences
Presents SKW research findings to Coalition Coordinators, sponsors and other organizations within the public health community
Supports SKW Internship Program
Oversees and coordinates the Safe Kids Worldwide Internship program
Coordinates Research Interns including providing day to day supervision
