Job description

The American Urological Association (AUA), the premier urologic association providing support to the urologic community, is currently searching for a Research Director position located in our Linthicum, Maryland office. We are required to be in the office on Tuesdays/Wednesdays with remote working on Mondays/Thursdays/Fridays.

In General

This position is responsible for direct oversight of the AUA Office of Research programs, new initiatives, and research-related strategic goals and priorities, including those of the Urology Care Foundation (UCF), the official foundation of the AUA. These programs support the extramural urology research funding and education of the Office of Research as well as the research advocacy activities of the AUA. Supervises all staff administering AUA research programs. Acts as primary communication point and advisor to the AUA Research Council as well as associated committees, workgroups, and panels. Represents the AUA to government, medical, research and other organizations on research-related issues and serves as the AUA's internal staff resource on urology relevant research matters.

Typically

The individual in this position will focus on:

Research Funding
  • Ensures compliance of UCF research grant policies and processes with current extramural funding best practices. Includes tracking, evaluation and reported of funded
  • Collaborates with the UCF in fundraising activities to ensure adequate support is in place for all research grant programs.

Research Education
  • Develops and stewards a robust portfolio of research education programs using co-sponsored symposia, educational workshops, and online research education courses.
  • Maintains and enhances intra-AUA relationships and collaborations with departments directly related to research education programs.

Research Advocacy
  • Serves as AUA research staff liaison with federal and non-federal funding agencies, and special interest patient groups in the area of urology research funding.
  • Serves as research staff advisor to the AUA Research Advocacy Committee.

Governance and Operations
  • Works with the Research Council and Research Committees to define a comprehensive research agenda with strategic goals and tactical solutions,
  • Supervises Office of Research staff in coordinating the activities of Research Council subcommittees, workgroups, and panels.

To be Successful

Candidates must provide leadership and have effective critical thinking skills. It is essential that the individual in this role have strong networking, planning, and communication skills; strong understanding of policies and processes of extramurally-funded biomedical research.

In addition:
  • Master's Degree in a biomedical research-related discipline; MD or PhD strongly preferred
  • Minimum 10 years' postgraduate experience in biomedical research and/or research administration, preferably in urology-related research
  • Strong knowledge of, and direct experience in, the academic, extramurally-funded landscape of medical research support and processes as a funded investigator and/or research administrator
  • Minimum 5 years' management experience working with diverse groups of individuals at all levels including organizational governing bodies, doctoral-level professionals, federal officials, and program staff.
  • Minimum 3 years' experience successfully managing, leading, and coaching diverse teams preferred
