STUDENT ACTIVITY FUNDS TECHNICIAN

SUMMARY DESCRIPTION

Under general supervision, performs routine reviews of student activity funds reports submitted by individual schools; assists school personnel in resolving issues with recording and reporting student activity funds transactions; prepares a variety of accounting, statistical and narrative reports; trains new users of student activity funds software; assists school personnel in complying with established District policies and procedures. Incumbent performs related work as required.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

This is a single position classification within the District's Office of Business and Financial Services wherein the incumbent assists other District personnel based at school sites with the routine clerical bookkeeping functions. The Student Activity Funds Technician classification differs from positions within the Account Clerk classification in that the Student Activity Funds Technician's work is more analytical and evaluative in nature than the Account Clerk's work requiring knowledge of the fundamental doctrines, theories and terminology of accounting. Positions within the Account Clerk class require knowledge of bookkeeping systems and basic accounting principles and practices and perform technical and clerical accounting tasks of a relatively well-defined nature.

EXEMPLARY DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES

Examines, analyzes and verifies accounting records, financial statements, and related documents and other data to insure adherence to established internal controls and policies and procedures established for student activity funds; notes discrepancies; assists in year-end closing of fiscal and accounting records; prepares routine reports and financial statements, and makes recommendations.

Maintains computerized records utilizing word processing and spreadsheet software; prepares accounting, statistical and narrative reports and statements; advises District officials, outside auditors and school site personnel on student activity fund accounting policies and procedures.

Oversees, reviews and trains school staff who handle monies, record entries, prepare reconciliations, and perform other student activity funds record-keeping duties.

EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS

Education/Experience: Any experience equivalent to education and experience that would provide the required knowledge and skills is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and skills would be:
  1. Education: Equivalent to 15 semester units or 22 quarter college units in elementary and advanced accounting, and/or auditing;

AND
  1. Experience: Two (2) years of experience performing accounting or auditing duties;

OR
  1. Experience: Three (3) years of full working-level accounting and/or auditing duties which included governmental, commercial, or industrial accounting or auditing.

Knowledge of: Basic accounting theory, principles, practices and procedures; basic non-profit accounting principles and procedures; computerized data processing as it relates to accounting procedures; laws, rules and regulations influencing fiscal operations; and basic office procedures, practices and equipment.

Skill at: Analyzing routine accounting data; drawing logical conclusions; analyzing and resolving problems situations; reading, interpreting and applying legal requirements and administrative policies and procedures to an accounting system; preparing clear and concise statistical, fiscal and narrative reports and documents; communicating effectively both verbally and in writing; planning and directing the work of others; operating computerized accounting systems; establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work; and working independently with minimal supervision.

Salaries are subject to adjustment and may increase and decrease each fiscal year. New employees hired by Washoe County School District are normally placed on the entry step of the grade of the position.

This is a 40 hour a week, 260 day position.

Eligible Employees who regularly work 27.5 hours per week or more receive full benefits of the district, including medical, dental, and vision insurance, holiday pay, vacation pay, sick leave, life insurance, and insurance premiums for summer months.

Beginning July 1,2023: If you are enrolling in our health insurance plan and submit all proper documentation, you should know that there is no waiting period, your medical, dental, vision and life insurance will become effective on your first contracted work day.

All eligible employees also enjoy no state income tax and no Social Security deductions for most positions working 20 hours per week or more.

New employees will be fingerprinted upon hire and every five years thereafter and will have $58.50 deducted from their first paycheck to help defray the cost of fingerprinting. Non-licensed employees will have $58.50 deduction when their fingerprints are completed every five years. Fingerprint fees are subject to change.

Temporary employees working less than 6 months do not receive benefits.
