Deputy Director for Commercialization

Job description

ARPA-E advances high-potential, high-impact energy technologies that are too early for private sector investment. ARPA?E is seeking a Deputy Director for Commercialization who will lead ARPA-E's efforts to move innovative, transformative energy technologies from the lab to the marketplace. In this role, you will manage a team of commercialization experts-the ARPA-E Tech-to-Market Advisors-and provide the market vision and expertise to complement the agency's technical strategy. The Deputy Director for Commercialization has a tremendous impact on the energy innovation community through the technologies ARPA-E supports with the intent to disrupt today's systems and transform how the United States generates, stores, and uses energy.

As an agency, ARPA-E values inclusivity, collegiality, flexibility, creativity, sustainability, and a passion for its energy mission, while striving to be a "flat organization" with a limited management hierarchy.

Who is the Deputy Director for Commercialization?

ARPA-E's Deputy Director for Commercialization leads a team of Tech-to-Market experts who help ARPA-E awardees engage investors, scale operations, and turn an idea into the next big thing. Our awardees have the potential to revolutionize the global energy landscape, but only if their technologies make it to market.

As one of ARPA-E's senior leaders the Deputy Director for Commercialization crafts the agency's commercialization strategy and works with the ARPA-E Director and Deputy Directors for Operations and Technology, respectively, to execute the agency's mission. You also work directly with Tech?to?Market Advisors as they support individual awardees' commercialization enterprises.

The Deputy Director for Commercialization must be a respected thought leader within the energy industry and/or climate change mitigation space and an experienced practitioner in how to scale technologies from early-stage R&D to disrupt energy markets and create new paradigms.

As someone with an entrepreneurial mindset, the Deputy Director for Commercialization identifies and develops new approaches and programs to deliver on ARPA-E's mission and expand its impact. As an agency leader, you are expected plan and implement engagement strategies to build and leverage networks that forge connections between ARPA-E technology developers and the investment communities that enable the growth and market adoption of their disruptive technologies. Finally, as one of the main public faces of the agency you will represent ARPA-E at conferences, industry events, and other speaking opportunities.

What Does the Deputy Director for Commercialization Do?

The ARPA-E Deputy Director for Commercialization is a national leader in moving high-impact energy innovation technology into the marketplace. You have a wide range of responsibilities to drive the agency's efforts in this arena.

The Deputy Director for Commercialization leads the ARPA-E Tech-to-Market Advisors who identify and develop commercialization strategies for ARPA-E performers, work with them to identify new follow-on funding sources, and counsel them on key strategic opportunities. These could include raising capital, partnering with or licensing to large corporations, and spinning out and forming ventures. While each Tech-to-Market Advisor is responsible for their own program(s) and project teams, you oversee all the agency's commercialization work and provide input and insight to the team.

The Deputy Director for Commercialization spearheads the design and implementation of ARPA-E's groundbreaking Seeding Critical Advances for Leading Energy technologies with Untapped Potential (SCALEUP) program. SCALEUP was created to help ARPA-E-funded technologies, past and present, transition from proof-of-concept prototypes to commercially scalable and deployable versions of the technology and be well-positioned for private sector investment. ARPA-E launched SCALEUP in 2019 and has deployed nearly $200 million through the program, with another $100 million recently announced in its third installment. You are involved in every aspect of the SCALEUP program from project selections through to project completion.

The Deputy Director for Commercialization must continually assess markets to identify potential new funding areas for ARPA-E technologies. This includes technologies that can reduce American energy imports, decrease energy-related emissions, increase energy efficiency across the economy, provide transformative solutions to radioactive waste and spent nuclear fuel, and improve energy infrastructure.

The Deputy Director for Commercialization leads external outreach activities to build a commercial stakeholder ecosystem through active engagement that aligns with awardees' growth aspirations. You work closely with the leadership and communications support teams to update agency messaging and evaluate external opportunities to build ARPA-E's profile.

In addition to serving as a single commercialization point of contact for the ARPA-E Director, the Deputy Director for Commercialization is a senior leader in the agency. In that capacity, you work with the other members of the leadership team to manage the agency as a whole. This includes making agency budgetary and personnel decisions as well as setting the agency's technical vision.
